I have to interview some guys next week for a short contract. All they will be doing is installing PC's and setting up Outlook, pst's, mapped drives etc.........I guess just asking those sort of things.......

When I interview for short term contractors, I just ensure that they know how to do the tasks that will be required. I ask pointed questions about installing or upgrading an OS or whatever application I am setting up. I make sure that they know UNC naming conventions for mapping network drives. You have to show them what you want done anyway, so I wouldn't spend too much time in an interviewing process.

Ask them how long they've been looking for an IT job, then hire them.

Our university is buying 600 new computers. I'm going to hire some outside help for the installs and set up. I don't plan to ask anything technical other than

Can you read directions?
Do you know how to plug in the mouse, keyboard, and monitor?

If they meet that criteria, I'll hire them.

A few years ago I interviewed for a contract job. They required an MCSE and at least 3 years of IT experience.

I got the job, but as it turned out, all we did was Ghost machines and put them back in the box to be deployed.

What a joke. They could have hired anybody for that.

I had a company hire me for a two day contract job. I had to fax them a great big application, show them my certification cards, and do a 20 minute telephone interview.

The whole job was changing the computers on the network from a Novell client to a microsoft login on a win 2K server. So simple anyone could have done it.
