This is the situation , I have ME I want to up grade to XP .I have a Antivirus in my computer, and adware *I believe I should Disable both them before up grade.
I read on line that some people lost all the programs that they use to have in ME when they up grade to XP ,and also their NIC does not work with XP * WHAT I SHOULD DO TO AVOID problems

My I reiterate? You can not upgrade from ME to XP.

You will have to re-install all the applications and utilities.

XP does have a vast range of driver support but you may have to visit the web site of the respective hardware manufacturer to see if they have an XP driver if XP fails to recognise the hardware in question.

I'm not the one who is claiming to be Microsoft certified. However, if it were my computer I assure you I'd be able to fix it without posting cries for help in several forums.

I believe there is something called "Technet" on microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx) that would probably be able to square you away (just make sure you translate it to your grammar style first).

Here's how you should input the url so it will be translated to your grammar skill-level:

I trying to figure out why it's being said that Me to XP is not a valid upgrade option when MS clearly states that it is.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...ing/matrix.mspx

Granted I have not had the pleasure of doing a Me to XP upgrade so I don't know of any potential pitfalls out of the ordinary that that you'd run into regardless of the OS you are upgrading from. I would definitely run the upgrade advisor utility to see what hardware/software XP picks off as being incompatible.

Download it here:

I have upgraded from ME to Xp, but had to go get a lot of drivers to get everything running again (digital cameras etc...). A lot of the items I had on my computer had to be treated as dealing with 98 to work.

That may have been changed since I sat the exam.

Microsoft pulled the plug for support on ME not long after it was released for obvious reasons.

If I'm wrong then I apologise but I have yet to hear of anyone successfully upgrading from ME to XP.

Has anyone else has the pleasure of this experience?

You certainly can upgrade ME to XP, because I did it. I had no problems updating drivers of any kind; I Just had to flash my BIOS first for some reason. If you want to lose all your programs do a "clean install" (that might be the best bet, anyways. Back stuff up first if necessary). Just be aware that some software won't work properly with XP.

That is why I upgraded to XP, ME was a horrible OS, it came on the computer that I bought, I upgraded to Xp as soon as I could. I am not a computer guru by any stretch of the imagination, but, I went out and bought XP and upgraded ME.

Probably not...that is why I post in an ENGLISH speaking forum and not in a forum with a language I barely understand.

I actually downgraded from ME to 98 before XP came out. ME caused me nothing but heartaches.

I would have went the same direction if XP would have not been out, ME was a nightmare in my household.

I DO AGREE ME IS THE WORST OPERATION SYSTEM , IT is no stable , BASE ON FAT 16 NOT LIKE WIN XP/2000 THAT USE FAT 32 .

I've never worked w/ ME. Now I'm glad I haven't.

After reading these posts, I was curious re: ME. Pretty slim pickings on Microsoft's website in regards to support! You have my empathy.

Actually ME is FAT32, unless your hard drive is smaller than 511MB or use legacy software, FAT16 is almost obsolete. Windows 2000/XP use NTFS as a file system, but is compatable w/FAT16/32. Usually used when dual booting w/9x. You can up grade to XP from either 98 or ME. However, if you want to keep programs, from ME to XP, you need to use FAT32 as your file system, because NTFS will not recognize anything in FAT32.

Freak had an interesting add-on in a totally different forum re: NTFS is just a small file. I'll see if I can get you a link, but it seems as if you can convert even W98 to NTFS using just that file? I don't know. My memory isn't reliable.

However, with Study_tx sys, it sounded as if the whole partition was ME. Study didn't want to reformat & thus used partition magic.

Also, I mean no challenge, but as far as I know, isn't it fat 32 that can't communicate through NTFS? Otherwise, I was in full agreement w/ your statements, Papajj. My compliments to the chef..

It actually allows Windows 98 to support & access NTFS drives (by providing Windows 98 with an NTFS file system driver).

Here is the utility:

Sorry to veer off the subject. Tech Shark, I was wondering last night if you got your moniker from the fact that sharks die if they don't keep swimming. Great analogy to Info Tech. if it is....

Hey upgrading tends to be pretty easy. There is a tool you can download to check on compatability: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...heckcompat.mspx In addition many people ask me if they should upgrade or reinstall. I tell them all the time if you like they way your OS and everything is working fine upgrade. If you are not happy with the how your OS is working and you have strange stuff going on you should re-install.

I myself would as a general rule of thumb re-install a ME box just because of time, in my opinion the 9X (that includes ME) registry get's pretty bloated after a while.

my 2 cents....good luck 1 way or the other.
