You cannot upgrade from Windows ME to XP.

Unfortunately, I agree with stnosc, try to be more literate in your posts.

XP has a huge driver library but you will have to re-install your applications.

Just format it and do a clean install. Save what you want to save to CD first of course.

Shouldn't an MCSA know how to do this? Or at least figure it out? Makes me wonder how valuable MS certifications are....hmmmmm.....

I shouldn't talk I guess. I know some CCNAs who don't know where to plug in a console cable.

Study_tx your English is atrocious. And isn't it obvious if you don't upgrade a driver the device will not work!!! Have your run the compatibility menu from the XP cd? Boulware is right, go to the manufacturers web site of the modem or NIC get the XP drivers and backup what you want and perform a clean install. I am amazed your a MCSA and a CCNA....and your running ME...shame on you.......I had ME for a day several years ago and got rid of it......utter shite

At least it gives us little shavers a chance to be of help.

You can try this..install xp on a 2nd partition. DON'T format as NTFS. Use fat 32. I'm not sure what the communication issues will be, but hey, what do you have to lose? I've included a tip below to get XP to cooperate w/ an o.s. it doesn't like.

With AdAware & McAffey, I've not heard of any interference problems. You'll still need to add them to the new partition since you're not doing an upgrade.

Here's a tip:
You can bypass XP's tendency to push out other op. systems by moving the boot flag. Use (freeware) Ranish partition manager to format, instead of fdisk. Move the boot flag from ME to the new XP partition. Add XP & then move the flag back to ME via Ranish so you can boot up ME first.

No matter what, you'll have to reboot each time you want to use each partition (w/o Virtual Machine)...but you can buy time until you feel comfortable w/ XP.

Also, with Ranish
1) Use version 2.40
2) Use "standard ipl" at the bottom

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a scanner I use only on a fat 32 partition. Also, my brand new modem didn't work initially w/ XP.

The HCL list? Probably a bunch of people who have paid Microsoft, not really something incompatible w/ the op. system. In my case, I just installed a generic (dial up) modem driver.

Trial & error w/ that stuff..just keep pushing XP past the warnings it gives you.

If you don't own a ZIP drive or CD burner, creating another partition with Partition Magic isn't a bad idea. I make second partitions all the time to backup my stuff when I do a clean install. However I'm just lazy and cheap.

Skim a little deeper, I have upgraded ME to Xp, a few driver problems was all that I had to deal with, still working well after a year later.

I've read what Prezbeard is talking about. I saw it on a certification website as a practice test question. As a result, I was under the same impression he was.

Most likely the test question stated "what are the RECOMMENDED upgrades..." I would definately not recommend an upgrade from ME after what this search turned up.

http://search.microsoft.com/search/...pgrade+me+to+xp

Definately not a fun upgrade, that's for sure. I'm glad I've never dealt w/ ME.

According to this from M$, ME to XP is supported: http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;292607

However I don't recommand it.

2000 won't support an ME upgrade at all.

It never hurts to try something new. Like many upgrades the first thing you want to do is back up all your data that you would like to keep. Make sure you have all your disk for your programs. Some programs mightnot be compatible, but the Microsoft website says it is upgradeable. After you got all the back-ups prepared you can start. I always heard it is good to run disk cleanup to get rid of temp files. Than I would run some Norton utitlies followed by Norton Optimizer. I would also run Norton Anti-Virus to make sure you have no viruses on your hard drive. Once this is all done I would try to upgrade by intalling XP from the Windows ME GUI. Usually the OS will ask you that it has detected a newer OS, would you like to upgrade and say yes. From there on you have to click and answer all the installation questions. If that does not work you will have to do a clean install. After the optimization you will put the cd into the cd tray and reboot the computer, make sure the BIOS is set to boot off the CD drive. Boot with cd-rom support and the set-up will start. You will have to format the hard drive, I would choose the ntfs option. Than after that the set-up will have a lot of questions you answer. After the install you will have to search for all the drivers for your specific device in your computer. Usually your video card, sound card, nic, etc. If you have Norton after everything is setup the way you want you can make a back-up so that if something happens in the future you can restore your computer back to a clean installation, fresh and somewhat new.

Whatever you decide to do make sure you have the computer turned on when you do it. I am not sure if the MCSA covers that or not.

You have to remember Microsoft is hell bent on denying that ME ever existed. They took it off all the store shelves and blacked it out in every text book.
