Hi to everyone...it's been awhile since I visisted the site but I have a question. I have a Compaq computer 7360 Presario. I have upgraded it to Windows XP Professional. It runs slow because I only have 64-8=56 megs of memory on it. I am wanting to add additional memory, but I am not really sure what kind to add, and how much. The thing is in the Compaq computer it seems I have to go through alot just to add RAM to the system. I am not sure, but it looks as though I will have to remove either the power supply or the motherboard just to get to the modules. Anyway...any information will be appreciated.
thanks
Lillian

First off, read your motherboard manual. Make sure to find out what kind and how much RAM your system can take and which slots need to be filled first. I have never seen a computer that requires you to remove power supplies or motherboards to install RAM.

Sites like crucical.com may be able to assist you with selecting the type of RAM available for your PC. However, much like the others may say, you'll need your mobo information.

I only mentioned crucial because it is one of the more "popular" places for good RAM (plus their two-day shipping is awesome)

thanks for the reply guys... I have tried to find a manual for my motherboard, haven't been able to, I guess I will just try a little harder.

As far as removing the motherboard and power supply....I may not have to, it's just so clutterd getting to the ram, I just figured I will need to. I have been to the Crucial sit, and they did recommend some RAM that was compatible with my system, I just figured some of you guys have had experience with Compaq computers in installing ram and was hoping it was an easier way without removing any other component.
thanks again

You can usually find a copy online. What kind of mobo do you have?

If you haven't started to work on it yet, you may want to read this first before buying any memory. According to this person, the DIMM height can be a factor. Caveat 6 is what I am referring to.

I used the crucial site to determine what I needed. I have a compaq, too, and I gotta tell ya, you won't have to remove the mobo, but you will find it a tight squeeze.

Also, the fact that your computer is running slow may have less to do with ram than with your processor. I don't know what processor your system runs, but I have a Presario 5030 and wouldn't even try to put XP on my system, in fact I can't even use an external CD burner because my processor is too slow.

Just a two-part side question: First, now, before you install your ram, would you buy another compaq when it's time for another one?

Second, after you install your ram, would you buy another compaq when it's time for another one?

I won't.
