How do I know what skills I have?

| How do I know what skills I have? For example many job postings might be something like "Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, Cisco IOS, Windows 2000, 98, XP 2003, Linux, WAN Technologies etc..."
How do I know if my skills are strong enough to put on my resume? I realize that certifications usually cover those topics, but is having those certifications really mean I know those topics well enough to have them on a resume? How am I supposed to know if my experiences with those technologies is enough to make me knowledgeable in them?
Is there any good way to gauge skill level on a practical level? Am I better off just leaving those out until I have 10 years of work experience under my belt? | |

| you're secong guessing yourself too much here. You know if you know DHCP, there isn't that much to know about it. If you doubt whether you know something, then you probably don't know it.
Take a quick test: choose a topic, such as DHCP, and pretend that someone just asked you to tell them everything you know about it. Answer *aloud* which will force you to structure your thoughts. See how much info comes out.. | |

| I don't think you should put things on your resume if you don't have the experience. If you only have knowledge of certain topics (i.e. DNS, DHCP, Active Directory), put that in your cover letter.

What constitutes experience though? I built a cisco and Microsoft lab from the ground up in many different configurations. Does that count as experience or does it only count if done in the real world? I never know what I should include on my resume. | |

| I would put all of that in a cover letter.
Resumes should contain work experience or experience a third party can verify.
