hey all, I've just got a tv card for the pc but I was hoping to be able to share the cable tv connection over the IP network. Has anyone got a clue how to do this ??

It'd be pretty cool to be able to set this up at work on every pc ... once the boss doesn't know

not sure how that would work, but the bandwidth consumption would probably bring your network down...

I agree. I hope it's gigabit!

wouldnt there be a copywrite issue with rebroadcasting shows live like i think you are getting at?

i have copied bits and pieces from my TiVo and feel relatively safe doing so (most of what i have copied lately have been Toyota Truck commercials anyway) but entire shows over a network seems to be a bit too public for me.

well, sure there would be an issue with that, but then again, many tivo-like devices allow you to broadcast the content of one PVR to another PVR on the same LAN...

not really ....
i've implemented cisco's iptv and you can multicast a 1mb mpeg1 stream
or a full screen dvd quality mpeg2 @ 6mb

Check out VLC. I'm not sure if it can do this for live TV, but it's handy for streaming DVDs over a network. DVD streaming takes up 6-9Mbps, which isn't a big deal for most switched Fast Ethernet networks.

I can't imagine there'd be a problem with copyright issues as he'd only be creating a kind of distribution system as used in many homes.

The only stumbling block I could see would be regarding television licensing, but that's me thinking along UK lines, I'm not sure whether they have TV licenses in Eire.

rebroadcasting a television for use in your own home verses use over a network, unless its a SOHO, i dont think is the same. realize that many home uses of television are illegal but no one really cares. add several people in a semi public situation then the rules will change. even educational institutions must get permission to rebroadcast virtually anything.

i guess it all boils down to what it is he is doing and where. at first glance, it simply sounds to me that he wants to share his cable tv access to the neighborhood. im all for that, but he should exercise some caution.

Check out ATI's Multimedia Center. I use it for my home made media server and it works ok. The latest versions offer a product called EazyShare which allows one pc to be the server and then clients can connect to watch tv from one of their TV tuner cards. All of the clients have to have an ATI card, though.

well if live broadcasts arent required, (looks around to make sure no one is watching) i always record certain shows or segments from my DVR to DV to VCD format. I can get just about 30 min worth onto a standard CDR with very decent quzlity using SVCD setting in WinDVD.(resolution is 640 by 480 i think) the only reason i use the DV camera is that the distance between the computer and the DVR is too much and neither is very conveinent for moving to say the least.

the reason i do this in not for commercial purposes or what ever, but i get DirecTV and there are several shows that dont appear on normal cable and if something comes on that i think my family might be interested in, i will tape it.

thanks for the info and welcome to the forum! This sounds cool - except for the proprietary side of the solution...
