| I have a problem. I am trying to reload a Gateway Solo 5300 notebook with Windows 2000. The swappable cd-rom doesn't work with it so I found a DVD-rom from another Solo 5300 and put that in. I restarted it and it found the drive. I then inserted the windows 2000 pro cd, which it detected, and restarted th machine. I changed the boot order to cd, floppy, network, HD. It won't boot from the cd. When I put the floppy drive back in and tried a Win 2k boot disk it tried to boot from that. What is wrong? | |

What is wrong? Is this final jeparody.
Nothing is wrong except Win2k is stupid. It was made in 1999 and the installer is stupid. It expects the device to identify itself as a CD-ROM. If it does not have that value then it seems to get confused. Have the ID string stay CD-Writer or DVD and it may not work depending on which version you had slipstreamed in. It does not work with those ad in IDE cards to speed up to ata100 or blow past 137 gig either.
If it does not work then typically you will have to use the 4 floppy boot disk set that is in one of the folders on the CD. Or copy everything (main install folder) to your hard disk from the cd and go and find winnt.exe and run it. I think that is the name I don't have access to a 2k CD at the moment. | |
