Here in Las Vegas, the cheapest stations are $2.159 for 87 octane regular. More for premium grades. $2.259 for regular is a normal sight around town today.

Let's see...

$1.24 per Litre.
1 Gallon = 4 Litres.

So 4 Litres (1 Gallon) = $4.96 a Gallon

NZ$4.96 = US$3.01

Uh... 3 US Dollars a gallon down here, guys.

Before we all go screaming "the sky is falling", let's put this into perspective. This excerpt is from http://www.cato.org/research/articl...lor-040406.html. It is from 6 April 2004, so the price of $1.73 gallon is lower than now, but I think you'll get the picture. Remember, this is using the 2003 dollar:

"If we adjust gasoline prices for inflation and use 2003 dollars, we find that during the most celebrated days of cheap fuel and gas guzzling cars -- 1955 -- gasoline actually cost $1.66 a gallon on average across the nation. In 1972, the year before OPEC began to flex its muscles, prices were $1.28 a gallon. In 1981, the real record was set -- $2.36 cents a gallon. Heck, prices are only a nickel higher now than at this time last year.

We should not stop there, however. A better measure of the affordability of gasoline over time is not its inflation-adjusted price alone, but its inflation-adjusted price in comparison with our economic resources (in this case, inflation-adjusted GDP per capita). Even though the real price of gasoline was lower in 1972 ($1.28) than today ($1.73), per capita GDP is now $39,919 whereas it was only $20,667 (measured in 2003 dollars) in 1972. Real incomes have almost doubled since 1972, but real gasoline price have risen only 35%. Real gasoline prices were slightly lower in 1955 than today ($1.66 versus $1.73). But real per-capita GDP is almost $40,000 today and was only $14,094 in 1955. Real gasoline prices at the height of the oil shock in 1981 were higher than today ($2.36 versus $1.73), while real GDP per capita was lower ($24,369 versus almost $40,000) than today.

By those measures, then, gasoline prices today are only 37% of what they were in 1955, 70% of what they were in 1972, and 45% of what they were relative to income in 1981.

The idea that politicians haven't the faintest idea what they're talking about when it comes to economics should not surprise us by now. The idea that our nation's top journalists, however, can be so incompetent when it comes to reporting such simple stories as this should give pause. If they bothered to do the math, they'd know there's no reason for panic at the pump. But that's not a very sexy story now is it?"

since we got a lesson in price adjusted for inflation, shall we have one on nominal vs real exchange rate?

Mmmmmmmm now if my maths are right.

1(US)gallon = 3.785411784 litres

So UK price per litre = £0.80/$1.42

So price per UK Gallon = £3.63

Equivalent price per US Gallon = $5.38

And we're an oil producer!!

Mind you Tony and his cronies take about $4.00 of that in taxes to 'improve' our transport infrastructure.

b!tch about U.S. gas prices is that I've felt your price pain firsthand.

It's funny that you quote the Cato Institute because they announced yesterday that they want the US to use its oil reserves to drive down the cost of oil.

Bush will never do that because his cronies are making money hand over fist with these overstated prices.
i.e. cost of oil rises 15% but oil companies raise gas prices by 30%.

We saw the same thing the first time we went to war with Iraq 14 years ago. Oil companies just suddenly raised prices because of uncertainty in the oil markets during the war.

The next year, oil companies posted RECORD profits.

It's very hypocritical of Bush to claim we needed tax cuts for the rich to boost the economy short term, but he refuses to tap into our oil reserves to lower oil prices short term.

Since we now have control of OPEC and are thus a defacto member of OPEC, I vote we start fixing the prices of gas ourselves.

in Western WA it is 2.21 for regular but the price has gone up almost every day for the past two weeks.

if you really want to know why gas is high lets look at a study that is from a company known for not using bias in their commentary. mind you, it is a long document and very dry but it does get to the nuts and bolts of how the price of gas is determined and you might be surprized at how little the price of crude has to do with it.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exe...CE8BEB830B1.htm

the bush administration will continue to sabotage every effort to dimish the ability to use oil as a terrorist weapon. It is the bush administration, and their terrorist use of oil that is the true terrorist threat.

if not for the bush's and their friends, fossil fuels would be very nearly irrelevant by now. it would certainly not worth destroying america through the illegitimate pursuit of iraqi oil.
