Problems with Win 98SE

| Please bear with me on this one.
I used to work with a Cisco guru some years ago, and I learnt last week that he had died in a motorcycle accident. I heard this from his bereaved fiancee.
She called me again in a very distressed state because she could no longer access their digital 'photos via his PC.
I visited on Sunday and found his PC had three hard drives. The PC is dual boot; Win98SE and Win 2000. She uses 98. The problems are; once the PC has booted IE causes a problem and shuts itself down, and another error occurs when I try to access Windows Explorer such that Explorer shuts down as well. I have tried to re-install Win98SE but cannot get to the files on the CD because of the Explorer problem.
Now the digital pics are located on a remote server which is accessed via Broadband Internet, and I cannot get to that because of the Explorer problem. The Internet connection has been tested and is fine.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I really would like to help this young lady.
Any suggestions?

| Sorry to hear that Hippo, does this machine have any virus software or anything......one thing to possibly try is to Ghost the machine and use Ghost Explorer to get the files......worth a try.....

Sorry mate if this pics are not on the PC couldn't you set up an Internet connection to the server and get the pics from your own PC....... | |

Is it possible that if the sasser worm has hit the Win2000 part of this dual boot machine, then that might affect the Win98SE side of it? I didn't log onto the Win2000 partition to check for sasser, so I suppose that might be an option to try. I have a print out of how to identify and kill sasser on Win2000; the symptoms are similar to what this PC is experiencing. I will need to dig a liitle deeper. BTW, Rob - the guy who died in the motorbike accident - was a typical "boffin", but he didn't leave any notes about what he was working on; his fiancee is an intensive care nurse and doesn't know one end of a computer network from a stethescope. So you can see why I am keen to help her.
Meanwhile, my laptop is screwed up after insatlling WinXP Pro and I cannot get an Internet connection with it.
Thanks for the help anyway.
