|
|

| I have certain items like: aim, morze1.exe, quicktime, etc... that I would like to remove from my startup menu completely. I do not just want to uncheck the box next to it in the configuration ulility, I want to remove it from the configuration utility startup, period. Anyone have a solution?
p.s. I want to keep the program.
|
| C:\Documents and Settings\user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Delete the items from the startup folder.

| Navigate to the startup menu and remove the shortcuts from there and your problem will be solved.
Depending on which version of windows you have will determine the exact path to the folder. Start/Settings/start menu/ and on from there to the startup folder.
Hope that helps.
The delay got me, now you have two answers to the question...

| I also have alot(over 50) *.exe in the startup in configuration utility that were put there by a virus. I've used my anti-virus program(I have AVG 6.0), its up to date, and found a couple of trojan viruses. I not sure if I found them all. The only problem I have now is at startup. The computer starts browsing for files it can't find, and there are alot of them. I uncheck them in the config utility, but they return upon restart. I would like to take them out of config utility startup. Please reply. Again, am running windows 98 second edition. | |

Well I guess you have phrased the question as best as you know how. I am going to guess that what you are calling the "config utility startup" is the win9x config utility showing Hive Key Local Machine (HKLM) run every time folder. It really has nothing to do with the config utility anymore than saying that I don't want file X to open in my word processor anymore.
Anyhow....
If you feel comfortable using regedit (many do not and find it scary) then you can edit them out. Remember there is no undo, save as etc. and screw up can crash windows instantly.
Go to the start menu, select run, enter regedit in the box. When regedit starts go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mi
crosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Run
in the left window. (run that line above togetheras the message editor won't) In the right window find the programs that are bugging you, highlight and delete each one. Close regedit and you are done. Reboot and the next time you start win config you will not find the offending programs.

| get to know that spot in your registry and be familiar with the apps that are normally there.
When you get a virus, it will oftentimes place a line in your registry at that spot to run on startup.
As Az said, don't explore other parts of the registry and start deleting or changing things. There is no undo option and no recycle bin. Any changes you make are immediate and permanent.
Don't mean to scare you, only to warn you.

| I am still having problems finding the *.exe files in the Regedit. The files associated with the virus; example MORZE1.EXE, MORZE2.EXE, Q345fdu.EXE, etc., there are over 300 of them. Any thoughts or suggestions. | |

Did you find the "run" folder? Did you see the normal *.exe files that normally start up like maybe your antivirus program or your sound mixer?
In addition to the run folder there is a RunOnce and maybe a RunOnceEx folder. If the programs are not present then they may not be flushed out of the RunOnce folder. A commercial registry cleaner may notice the programs are missing and offer to clean the registry entries out for you.
Oh secondly run down the HKEY_CURRENT_USER path to the same folder and check there. Both paths contain startups in NT based systems but I am not near a win9X system at the moment to check.

| I did all of those things you referenced. I seen the run, run-, runounce, etc on both the loacl machine and the current user, and was able to find and delete 10 of the over 300 that appear on the config utility startup section. Another note config sys utility takes forever to come up because of the amount of files associated with this virus problem, I think it started with the download of a spider solitaire game. Anyway my question now is does anyone know of a good registry cleaner outthere, whether it be shareware or for sale?quote: Help is a cry for others to share.

| You need to concentrate on getting rid of the virus first.
If your antivirus software can't get rid of it, try
housecall.trendmicro.com
They have a free online virus scanner.
Getting rid of the virus may get rid of most of your problems.
Also try Spybot's Search and Destroy at
Search & Destroy
Hope that helps.
Good luck my friend. | |

| I agree. If you have over 300 files then you may not have found the "analog" yet. This is a file that looks to see if the virus file has been removed and creates a new copy of it. The analog file probably has a name similar to a real windows file or 3rd party program file but is buried in the wrong directory. On winXP and Win2k there was a recent one named SVCHOST.
People are used to seeing multiple copies of svchost running which is just a shell really. This svchost generally buried itself in another directory and spawned new files. Norton could not kill it originally and you had to go to safe mode and run a virus scanner from there.
Win98 probably has similar funnies although the win9x flavors seem to be on the decline as people upgrade. I guess win9x is no longer a challenge to the jerks that create these things.

| Sounds like you have Spyware on your machine.
Besides Spybot, as mentioned previously, you also might try to download PestPatrol. They have a free evaluation here:
http://pestpatrol.com/
Or Google for AdWare or Spyware removal tools.
The good news is that these tools do a good job of cleaning files and registry entries. The bad news is that sometimes you have no choice but to rebuild.
Good Luck! | |

| I've had very good success keeping my XP/pro machines at home clean of viruses and spyware using McAfee and Spy Sweeper (WEBROOT. It pays to keep the anti-virus and spyware software up to date.
good luck | |

| I assume by configuration utility
you meant running MSCONFIG using the
START button, RUN, entering MSCONFIG
then looking at the Startup Tab.
You can also try running "System Information"
using START, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and looking at Startup Programs under Software Environment, Drivers. It will tell you where the programs are being loaded from
and the command being used to run them.
At least you'll know where to go to try
to delete them.
Hope this helps. |
