Is this site valuable to you?

| I see more and more posts degrading this site and some supporting the webmaster and his agents, the mods. I personally find a lot of value in this site and hope that it goes on forever. What do you think? | |

The posts I see degrading the site are the ones where someone doesn't get their way or has a post edited when they think it should not have been. Especially if it involves the use of profanity or someone has used deliberate sexual connotations.
Additionally, when the Trolls come out, they tend to be derogatory towards anyone that has an opinion different than them.
Personally I find Examnotes rather rewarding and have gotten information here first before finding it anywhere else.

| The site has changed alot since I joined back in 2000, and not all of it has been for the better. I'll just leave it at that. | |

| The input from the members of this site helped me obtain my A+ cert. For that I am grateful..Recently I have seen alot of bullshite posts from ignorant flamers, but I still find valuable info when I need it. and have even received some excellent advice from certain members especially when I was having virus issues(Thanks Enforcer). For the most part this is the best IT forum on the Net, I just think that to many members feed into the flamers that post negative shite, But I also think that the moderators should look for these a$$holes and delete their posts in a faster manner..I know we are all busy with our lives, but if you want to be a moderator on this site then you have to spend a little bit of time trying to filter out the content. JMHO...No offense to anyone.. | |

When I started in this forum back in 2000 it was a lot more open than it is now. There were also a lot more people participating in the forums which made it a lot more fun back then. Certifications seem to have slowed quite a bit so there seems to be a more constant group of people in here now. The new regime has different ideas than the old so some of the changes in attitudes are a little disturbing for sure. I just wish that everyone would mellow out and stop taking everything so serious...

| i think this site is helpful. it has helped me. it has also opened my eyes to things i didnt know i needed help with.
now as far as flames, etc. well nothing is perfect and this site is far from it. But i would have to look long and hard to find a site that is significantly better. I am a member of several different forums and when i have problems i usually post it in a few of them and i usually get an answer here first.
i will say that i have noticed a dropoff in participation here. a few good people have come and gone. but overall, its still a working and contributing site.

I'd agree. Im guilty of posting some drivel here. But has not the examnotes bubble burst? Back in 2000 the attitude here was great. All you needed was a ccna, mcse or even an A+ to open the door to a high paying IT job. Then the 'shortage' of IT jobs proved to be a little bit of a myth ( even before the slumping economy ), and with that all the Paper certs out there has degraded the value of what we took pride in. People are looking to Degrees or the next hot career ( medical perhaps? ).
Would anyone agree that the taking of IT certs and examnotes.net time has come and gone?

I couldn't agree more.
Mods used to be in control, the Webmaster was available for suggestions, responded in a timely matter, now we don't even know if he is around anymore or not... Members stuck to topics, i could go on and on...now there is Forums not even controlled by mods
and of course visited by trolls and dumpers.
Mods are flamed just for doing their Jobs, Topics in Forums are completely irrelevant to the subject.
In my honest opinion:
This Site is going down the Drain sooner or later.

| I'm abit of anewbie to this site so I can't comment on how it used to operate back in the old days. But It is definately a good forum, where people can express their views and look for some help on various issues. There are also experienced techies on here who provide an excellent service to other forum members when they require some form of assistance.
Keep up the good work chaps.

I would say that you are pretty close to right on the certs. Getting a cert won't guarantee you a job anymore and I think that word is getting around that IT doesn't have the opportunities that it used to. I know of an awful lot of experienced IT people that are working in other fields now.

I think the Webmaster has had to put his energies somewhere else in order to make a living. This site doesn't have near the traffic on it that it used to which means fewer people buying books and other tools using his links. It wouldn't surprise me too much if he lets this site go completely.

At the risk of being severely charred (which is probably inevitable after some of you read this post), I don't really care one way or the other if this site goes down the drain. My life doesn't revolve around this site, and if any forum member's life does, then he/she needs to GET a life.
Brain-dumpers appear to be a cancer on this
site, and when you have a moderator who tries to stop them from posting in his forum, he gets crapped on by a few "senior" members. Some of them seem to have a "I've got more tenure in this site than you do, so I should have my way ALL the time" attitude. And yes, I've participated in and even started some off topic discussions, mostly directed at the few "senior" members who think their s*** don't stink. I've noticed a couple or more of them seem to be migrating to other sites (and in one case, I suspect, joining this site under an alter ego) which probably is for the better.
That's my 2 cents, 2 dollars, and 2 much. I stand by with my fire extinguisher handy.

| I have lost interest here. In fact the only reason I came by today was because everyone was talking about this site in on a different site, and I thought I'd see what was happening.
I wouldn't say this site is bad, but I have chosen to spend my time on fewer forums and I didn't mind taking this one off my daily visit list.

| Without all of us Forum Junkies, this site would crash and burn. The exam notes are helpful, but I see no other value here. I really don't find 5 free practice questions very helpful. Haven't seen a post from the Webmaster in months. | |

| A forum is what you make of it.
Contribute to it positively and it will grow.
Contribute to it negatively and get involved in flamewars and arguments and it will die.
The mods on here try to keep the peace and make sure threads and posts stay within the rules, please support what they do, they don't get paid for it. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with them talk to the mod in question privately and calmly through PM.
Final word
Play nice guys | |

I agree wholeheartedly, we have had a great thing going here for several years now. I think it will continue to grow and people will always come here for advice. I don't know of any forum where people answer as fast as we do here.

| I agree with what enforcer, Freddy said. This is a good site, were just dealing with a slow trend and flammers. | |
| DaDnDe 2004-05-02, 1:00 pm |
| well i see no reason to hold a funeral yet. this place like all places will have its ups and downs. it may be on a bit of a downer now, but all that can change at anytime.
a forum is a living, breathing thing. we are the ones that keep it alive. so dont expect good days all the time because that is not how humans work.
i think the only thing lacking here is a bit more patience and understanding. sometimes its tough to patient when some idiot just pisses you off to no end and we all have our days when the "f*ck it" attitude just feels good.
we need to keep in mind that one bad thing is only the start of a trend if we keep it going. now realize that some things cannot be tolerated and should be dealt with as often as is neccessary. but other things that have to do with experiences and opinions usually have not completely right or wrong answer.

| Maybe its time to combine some of the forums. Like 'Other Comptia exams"'. maybe even combine MCSE. Do we really need an IT career women forum, where last post was a month ago. | |

Go into the IT Career Women forum and start a thread called "Women Have No Place in the IT Field!!!" and you'll get that forum hopping again.

| I think the Cert industry in general is going through a quiet time. Less people are going into I.T, which is a good thing. I say that for purely selfish reasons!
As to this site, there do seem to have been a few squabbles recently, but I think that happens in every forum at one time or another.
Another thing that happens in all forums is that a few old boys moan about the good old days.
Old boys always moan about the good old days. Its not just an I.T thing.
All moaners should bear in mind that moderators are unpaid and most don't do it for an ego trip. there are far easier ways of boosting an ego.
At the end of the day, the way to make a good forum is to make good posts.
I do think its odd that a moderator moan about irrelevent posts in a forum though. Surely the moderator should just move them?

I think you hit on the key to this forums success over the years. The quality has always been high, for the most part that is, there have always been some useless posts but that is just life in a forum setting.
|
| Since the cert I am now going for is not on this site I very rarely visit here anymore. I found it useful for the Micorsoft certs. There is still a lot of good information here, the forums are just not the same. You have to be careful what you post as there are too many here that don't understand that everyone had opinions and are entilted to them. | |

Respect for the opinions of others is an important aspect of any discussion group online or off. Without that, the group will fall apart.

| Okay, not going to get into a battle of wits regarding women's rights..I'd probably come up short.
I do enjoy the discussions. I learn something new each time I come here...things that I can't learn in class or even on the job. (Take "route print". Never heard anyone talk about that DOS command. Wouldn't have been exposed to it except here.)
I'm glad that the moderators have intervened with a select few. No need for nastiness. The IT field is about people skills as well as technical skills.

| I've never really understood the logic behind a "Women in I.T" forum.
If women want equality then fine, I say. Lets have equality for men, women, whites, blacks, browns, hell, even gingers.
But why seek to attain it by forming your own special group. Surely that just serves to isolate?

| despite ERA, most occupations are still male dominated and IT is no exception. But women are increasing their numbers every day and that is a good thing. consideration of sex is against the law and that is a good thing. The only consideration should be the ability of a person to do the job at hand.
i also believe that creating a separate forum to discuss female issues is not benefiting women but singling them out as people who need special handling. it is that idea that will slow the infusion of women into IT and that is a bad thing.
