Author Stopping A Program From Starting

Dear friends, I have a cyber cafe shop and I use this software to control the computers, you know, time, price and the whole thing.

On this particular machine the NIC card just went to hell. I replaced it and now I canīt have access to the desktop in order to configure the new NIC card because the computer(client) cannot find the server(the server being this software that controls the machines)and therefore blocked access to the desktop.

What I need to do is try to stop this program from starting or even delete it on the client side. I tried deleting it but since it is the first service to start on Windows I was not allowed to do that.
There must be an initialization file that can be edited. Iīm dealing here with Windows XP Professional.

Thanks for the help.

hey your software i am totally unfamiliar with, but i had a friend who was the network manager of a now(sadly) defunct game room.

he had a similiar control program since he rented game computers by the hour. and when he needed to make configurations on client machines his program allowed him to make a floppy on the main control computer that he inserted into the client computer that basically gave control back to the local user.

the disk contained some sort of password so just not anyone could slap a disk in there. although as i recall, these machines didnt have floppies in them normally so i guess he had an external plug in type but you get my gist right?

are you sure your program doesnt have something like that?

Thatīs the thing. I donīt have access to anything. Whatever needs to be done will have to be done through command prompt, but it connot be in safe mode because it wonīt let me delete the file since itīs already running.

Do you have another PC that uses the same type of NIC that broke. swap them over and then see if you can reconfigure.

Some say that stupidity can kill you. I am starting to feel like a corpse right now. (lol)

All the computers (20 total) in the shop have the very same configuration ans specs. Why didnīt I think of that before?

Anyway, I did it and it worked like a charm.

Thanks a lot.

wtg~~!

glad to hear that we could help you out (in a roundabout way)

but as far as being a bit slow, or a little low on caffeine (never stupid!!) i can assure you we all have our stories that for some reason never seems to get around as much as they should.

Ya know, all Iīve got to say here is that this is the best forum by far on tech issues on the planet. Trust me, I might have posted forty something questions here and not a single has gone unanswered or unsolved.

Keep up with the great job, all of you.

gotta agree with ya well

i am a member of nearly a dozen on line forums dealing with several topics. my car (Prius) local news( the daily olympian)TiVo, several other computer tech and cert sites

and this one is one of the most active and imformative of all. but more than anything its the people here. it has the right mix of fun, pranks and imformative responses to some tough real world problems.

sure we have some flame wars sometimes. but everyone always seems to kiss and make up when someone else has an emergency.

I use mostly use www.tek-tips.com for the serious stuff. This place is more light hearted for a lunchtime surf IMHO.
