Author need help with problem....

Guys, I need some help. Im at a real point of frustration. I have two Win XP Professional pcs that are doing the following:
1. When trying to install a printer that is connected to Windows 98 pc, I can not get pc1 to connect to printer. It is shared on the windows 98 pc, and when I browse with pc1, it does see the win98 pc, and the printer, but it will not connect to it. I have a win95 pc that connects to it just fine. I can ping it by either netbios name or ip, it just wont connect. I can get on the Internet and a server across the WAN no problem. I have tried enableing netbios over tcp\ip, doesnt work. Not sure what to do on this one.

2. On pc2, which is WinXP Professional, I want to install the same printer on it, so I go into DOS, and can ping netbios name and ip no problem. When I go to browse either by typing in \\pcname or \\ipaddress, it gives me an error (cant find). I can not get it to see anything on its own subnet, yet I can get on the Internet and get on a server across the WAN, no problem. DHCP works fine for both of these too. I have even changed the network card, same thing.

Anyone have any ideas what might be going on? I thought it might be WINS, but again, you can ping the netbios name in DOS. Even a "ping -a" will give you the netbios name. I cant make sense of it. Please help. Thanks.

Is there 2 different users logging on in your peer to peer network? If so, create the 2nd user on the winxp box, assign Admin rights, then connect to the printer.

It's an issue with usernames and passwords.

If you want to access anything on a 98 machine, you have to sign on the other computers with the same username and password as the 98 machine. Doesn't that suck.

I would attach the printer to one of the XP machines and share it. That way the XP machines can use their own usernames.

Create an account on the XP machine, and use that same account and password to sign on the 98 machines.

It should work after that.

We still have a handful of 98 machines on our network. They suck pig balls when it comes to file/printer sharing.

Hope that helps.

Make sure that in the Advanced Tab of your LAN adapter settings that Internet Connection firewall is disabled.
freak

please remember that Win 9.x is not meant to be networked. It's not even a Network OS, it's a networkable OS. I am not playing on words here, it's a huge difference in terms of how the OS is built.

It does sound like you are having an issue with user authentication.

Sharing a printer off of a Win 9.x box is a really bad idea anyway...

Internet Firewall connections is disabled, I was using my username, and this is on a domain, all usernames on the XP pcs have admin rights. Mainly using my username, which has domain admin rights.

Still cant get them to connect.

By the way, I have added entries in the LMHOST file and the HOST files. Still cant get them to work.

Make sure all computers on the network are using the same workgroup and different computer names. Then go on XP start/search/people or computers/computers on a network/type in the computer name of the wired(one with the printer)/search. It should find the computer, double click and you should see the shared printer or folders you shared. Double click the printer. Check in start/printers and faxes, if the printer with the computer name appears , make it your default or remember to point to it when you want to print. Hope this helps, let me know.

Try installing the printer locally first, using the correct drivers, then add a new local port. When Windows asks for a port name, type in the \\PCname\PrinterShare and
click OK. See if it can find it then.

OK, problem solved. I just installed a print server and let that be that. Ill figure the rest out later when I have a chance. Right now, everything is good.
Thanks all for your insight and your willingness to help. I am thankful for your help and expertise. Thanks again.

Try changing cables, perhaps one of your cabling is bad.

Give the static IPs, same subnet masks etc etc.

By the way what kind of printer is it?

As I said at the beginning of this thread, it's an issue with usernames and passwords.

If you want to access anything on a 98 machine, you have to sign on the other computers with the same username and password as the 98 machine. Doesn't that suck.

Win 98 machines can't join a domain, so it won't recognize your domain username. It only recognizes the username and password that you use to sign on the 98 machine.

saying it once is a sense of humour. saying it twice is a waste of everyones time.

but that is how you have 8600 posts for every imformative post you have, you post 4 that say nothing and do nothing.

now if only you would cut that ratio down to 1 in 3 good posts

Your opinion of me and my posts is of no interest to me. When you have brought half the help to this community that I have, I maybe will be more inclined to listen to have to say on this particular subject.

In the meantime, save your - and my - time and learn your place.

His place is not to take easy shots at those who built and contributed far more than him to this community, for one thing.

If it had been a lesser guy like Ruscorp, I would proceed to tell him to butt out and stick it up his ________ and then continue on with how inept and immature he is. I however, would not be as low as enforcer in bringing up the bestbuy guy.

I'll tell you what. I used the word "Dude" like I would used the word "Man". It so happens that one of the members involved in this thread actually uses "Dude" as a handle. Unfortunate as it may be, I didn't realize it until it was too late. I was actually, if not taking his side, at the very least asking the person with whom he was entering into an argument to calm down.
When I was made aware of the Dude duplicity, as it were, I used sarcasm to show that I was wrong. Some did not get it. Fair enough.

My original intent on responding in this thread was to help.

You say you "don't doubt your contribution to this forum", yet you wrote this:

Don't be surprised if I see something in there that I don't enjoy. Now this thread has gone long enough between you and I, and as a Mod, I ask you to take this offline if it must continue and use the PM function on the site.

Enough is enough already.

Time to get back to the subject of this thread.

For the last time, I will only entertain questions on this thread that do not have a direct relation to the original subject of the thread via PM. No need to clutter this thread further.

You know, I used to really like this website and really gain alot from this forum. Now, it is a waste of time. Someone always has to be a smartass. And I admit that I have been that way in the past. I guess this site holds true to the normal IT reputation, in that you have alot of assholes in this career. Freak is a prime example of that, especially in this thread. There is no place for attitudes like that in a community that was built to help. From what I have seen, people like that have lots of friends in forums, but in reality people cant stand to be around them. I have worked with several IT people like that, and they all had two things in common: 1. they THOUGHT they knew everything and 2. NO ONE liked them.
I know because I USED to be like that. I have since changed to be a better person. Maybe some of you in this forum should take a look in the mirror and just see that what you really are. Its only too late to change when you die. And you know who you are. Your life will be much happier when you realize what you are now and what you could be. Freak, you are one of these and when you can honestly stand up and apologize to DaNdDe, you will start to be a better person. That remark about "his place" really sucked! Stand up and be a man, and take responsibilty for what you say. Its called being accountable and taking responsibility.
enforcer

2004-04-14, 6:15 am

OK enough of this.

Dude (and I am addressing the person who goes by this handle), Freak was not having a pop at you, infact he was defending you. A couple of times you have taken what has happened to be directed at you and taken offence. This is one, and a deleted post/thread was the other. Neither of these was directed at you. The deleted thread/post was because another user posted an inappropriate post in that thread and for some reason webmaster deleted the whole thread instead of just the post.

People remember it is easier to misunderstand people in writing than it is when they are having a verbal converation with you, a lot is lost because of lack of intonation.

please everyone give others slack.

Now can we move away from the slanging match that's brewing in this thead.

Thanks

Dude:

i agree with you. when i worked at intel, i had the "pleasure??" to work with very talented, self-centered, and conceited people. if they were ever proven to be wrong in anything they said or did, they would never acknowledge it or dismiss it as unimportant.

now after saying that, the post i submitted in this thread was submitted to the wrong thread so i can understand Freaks response since he didnt deserve what i said based on this thread.
