Network management means monitoring and controlling the network so that it is working properly and providing value to its users.

Performance tracking is important since it enables net managers to be proactive and respond to problems before users complain, otherwise network management can revert to firefighting.

Without a well-planned and designed network, and a well-organized network management staff, operating the network becomes extremely difficult. Unfortunately, many network managers spend most of their time firefighting ----- dealing with breakdowns and immediate problems. If managers do not spend enough time on planning and organizing the network and networking staff, which are needed to predict and prevent problems, they are destined to be reactive rather than proactive in solving problems.

basically it means you are running round putting out fires (solving users problems) because someone didn't plan ahead when they were going to make changes.

When I was working in a Japanese bank it merged with 2 others, there was about a year of planning work as the three banks merged and then went live as one bank, they also decided to move from NT to 2000. two of the banks used lotus notes for email one used Exchange. Of course there was a lot more cases of different systems being used by the banks which had to be combined or just one type of solution used. Anyway the upshot was the first two weeks of going live, the desktop support teams were basically running around firefighting all the problems caused by the merger. on the first day the helpdesk has in excess of 3000 calls logged and that doesn't count the users that couldn't get through because the phones were engaged, and the users who just grabbed us as we were going round the floors to solve logged problems.

hell even I could log onto the helpdesk system to check for calls, I had to raise a call for that.

fire fighting is what happens when you are being reactive rather than proactive.
