I know there is a way but I can't remember how to unlock an excel spreadsheet that is password protected. Someone has locked a spreadsheet and left the company....

have you tried saving it as another file? Doesn't always work, but it does sometimes. Also, is it completely protected, as in you can't even open it without the password, or is it a "depends on password" protection type of sharing, or is a sheet protected, or is a range of cells protected?

There are ways around all of those.

I tested it out on my machine.
If a sheet is password protected, you can still copy and paste it onto another file.

Hope that helps.

Nope can't copy and paste onto another file, ctrl a etc doesn't work or edit select all. Also saved it under a different name but it keeps the security attributes......any other thoughts.....
The file opens but you can't edit anything.........

Try importing it into Access, then exporting as a text file.

This software does it all! You can recover your Excel password, and any other Office product for that matter!

Personally I prefer hacking it myself or free tools, but when your employer provides you with the neccesary tools then I'm all for that. Even working on your own, this software pays for itself! As does anything from Ontrack (File Recovery or Office Recovery)! Simply outstanding tools!

Tech Shark that looks great, but I went to try it and it is asking for payment already so no joy on that......yanqui that link to straxx is superb, it worked so well I gave the guy a $10 donation even though it was freeware.....worked like a dream, the guy editing the file os over the moon, he was told it would take three days to recover by the tech bods!!! Thanks again...

wow! I knew one!

Go me!

glad to help--and glad to know it worked, I'm sure I'll need it myself sometimes.

Is it astonishing how many people think they "know a lot about computeres?" I hear it all the time--"My friend knows a lot about computers." I'm still a rookie, and with what little I know I can tell them their friend don't know squat! So they "protect" things and "improve" things and "fix" things until they've woven a spiderweb around, over, within, and through their system that you have to cut through with a machete.

Was he trying to make life difficult on his departure or do you think he just forgot that someone would need that password?

A bit if both with regards to the password I think, sour grapes I guess......Anyway Yanqui don't put yourself down with regards to knowledge, as I said he was told it would take three days to recover this file os he could edit it, I usually ask on here if I can't find a solution, and I couldn't find a free one, but you did.......well done and thanks again

Although you have tried to imply that I will receive no donations, in fact it does not, because any payments would just go towards any extra expenses incurred due to having the extra income.

NB forgot to include confused to the list.

NB is an abbreviation for the Latin expression, Nota Bene, which in Engrish means "note well". BTW, PS is also from Latin; Post Scriptum, or "after the writing".

PMS is something most guys suffer from when their ladies are on their bikes.

Pay Attention--

Good grief, did I write that? I'm suffering from several disorders these days, everything's blooming down here and between a new keyboard and allergies and lack of sleep from the allergy medicine and frustration at my job I'm just not displaying my best stuff. Makes for an interesting day.

And I know I have to be very careful what I write anyway becuase you guys are AWFUL!
