what exactly is the difference between a managed and an unmanaged switch?
the only thing I'm concerned with is performance differences?

a managed switch allows you to manage it. IE you can enable ports, disable ports, set up VLANS, Trunks, security, port mirroring and a tonn of other stuff. They are more for a medium sized business...
