No, you don't have to. You can immediately upgrade to XP Professional.

If this is a "cracked" copy of XP pre sp1, you will not be able to install SP1

The OS came on my laptop when I bought it.

Is your XP Pro a cracked copy or did you actually buy it?

::can't remember the last time I "bought" an OS::

I had trouble with a clients computer that was installed by the Manuf. When I worked on it and it seemed that there was an intresting error and that the fix was to call Microsoft to get them to over-ride the problem. At this time I forget how to do that, nor would I want to get in trouble for giving that bit of info out anyways.

Call MS and good luck!
