Weird rare problem

| Did any of you come across this problem?:
I have a Computer, windows 2000 10GB single IDE harddrive (HDA).
I put in a 40GB second HD (HDB) as master on second IDE channel.
I boot up into win2k (HDA), and copy files from HDA onto HDB for backing up.
I then shut down the machine and take out HDB (backed up data).
I then boot the machine up as the computer was before I touched it.
I get to the Logon screen, Press ctrl, alt and delete and then logon ok.
A few seconds later, the computer tells me the paging file has been deleted or moved onto another partition. ???? I cannot get around this error and the computer goes back to the logon screen. It happens on each profile and in safe mode.
I then put back in HDB but the PC still wont load any profiles.
This has happened to me twice in 3 years, both times I've had to reinstall win2k. Can anyone shed some light onto why it happens, why Windows starts messing around with the paging file when a second HD has been put into the computer? Would it have been a good idea to uninstall HDB from the device manager before taking out HDB? | |

| One thing that you can do is set up different hardware profiles, one for dual drives and one for a single drive.
As to why it is happening, if you are allowing NT based systems to manage your page file it often splits it across moltiple drives, especially if the percentage of empty space on another drive is greater. It is a performance enhancement issue. Go to the virtual memory setting and use custom and make sure that no page file space is allocated to multiple drives. | |
