I would like to get some of your thoughts on Reverse DNS lookup in the fight on SPAM, virus's and spoofed email. Our email server is outsourced with our ISP as we are a small company. We were overloaded with SPAM even with a SPAM catcher program on the server. Our ISP recently inplemented Reverse DNS Lookup and it has been great with one exception. We have a few companies that we deal with that do not have their PTR records set up properly, thus their mail gets tagged as SPAM. I can't get them to repair their DNS. I feel that RDNS is a good thing and it should make people follow the RFCs and set their systems up properly. The companies that I am having problems with say that no one uses this anymore. ANy comments?

I work for a Tier 2 carrier and we are constantly setting up Reverse DNS entries for our ISP's clients (We work in the business market). If anything it is becoming more popular. In the end it depends on the company involved and how important it might be to their business.
With SPAM such a problem and growing - those businesses who are on top of things and have good Sys admins know the value of using it. Those who ignore it may not understand the impact it could be having on their business. It's suprising when you think of how important e-mail is to business now.

Our problem is, we have a company, actually they just acquired our company, and they have a consulting company that hosts thier website and their DNS. I am sure they host for more than one company. I am told that they cannot have Reverse DNS lookups for more than one domain. I am not sure if this is the problem or not but they have not been able to get the records set up properly so that we can receive thier mail. They told my management that we are using outdated tech that no one in the industry uses. I disagree, mainly from common sense but I can't put my finger on any other ISPs that use this because its not something that is easy to research.
