I got into a fight with my DSL provider Speakeasy and their CLEC COVAD over intermittency issues and want to switch providers. COVAD wants to charge me $199 for a "Pro Install" in which COVAD essentially separates my voice from DSL at the NID effectively creating a SDSL circuit so there is virtually no interference. Since I declined COVAD basically considers me dead and will do no other further troubleshooting on my circuit. I have threatened Speakeasy several times and I'm getting no where so I am canceling.

I have had ADSL service for nearly 4 years at 9209ft. from the CO. I had Telocity aka DirecTV DSL from September 2000 to January 2003 and Speakeasy DSL from there on with no problems up until my switch to Speakeasy/COVAD. I suffered a wrap-sheet longer than James Brown of intermittency issues and lost sync. They have done nothing but issue COVAD dispatch after dispatch to the CO which solves nothing. They are idiots with laptops as one of my Verizon friend says.

In late January 2004 after a POP upgrade I suffered intermittency so bad I had no surf for one week which then lead to a "pro install." I called Verizon for a second opinion and the tech said the line was fine. COVAD says it's bad though. Verizon says COVAD is full of it and COVAD says the same about Verizon. So here we go with the ILEC vs. the CLEC. I am quite fed up with COVAD and no longer wish to do business with cheats like them. I happen to believe Verizon for the first time in my life. I typically don't like Verizon (except for cell phone service.)

So that's why I haven't been lurking around here much lately. I've had to beg for a dial-up account and I'm slumping along at 31.2Kbps with a v.90 modem. Lovely NYC line noise.

I've narrowed it down to 3 provides. 1 cable and 2 DSL (nothing to do with COVAD of course)

1.) Earthlink Cable (thru Time Warner)
2.) AT&T DSL
3.) Verizon Online DSL

Any opinions on there 3? I'm trying to stay away from any DSL provider that uses COVAD. I also don't have cable TV; I have Dish Network so RoadRunner is a no-no.

Sorry for the rant. Your opinions are welcome.

How would you get Earthlink cable service if you have no cable service now? Also, doesn't Time Warner do the Road Runner service too?

I voted for the Earthlink service. I've used Earthlink for dialup and so far, haven't had any problems that couldn't be resolved with an E-Mail or by calling them. Of course cable service might be different, but on a whole, I think Earthlink does alright. I have Adelphia cable where I am now and would move to Earthlink if they had service in this area.

Earthlink doesn't require you have cable TV nor does RoadRunner. Time Warner comes out and wires your home. The difference bewteen Earthlink and RR is RR tacks on an extra fee for people who don't have cable TV or just have basic service. Earthlink doesn't does care whether you have cable or not.

Go with verizon. They have cut prices and doubled speed. I have had good experirence with their tech support as well though I have had rare need use it. Which of course is a good thing.

What kind of speed you talking? I get like 1440kbps at work and home.

I just did a test and it resulted in 1.4megabits/sec

Verizon has been very good out here in So. Cal. Down link has been upped to 1.5Mb which used to cost and extra $10 when I started with it 3.5 years ago and 768K was $39 then. Now 1.5M is $29 and unlike cable you are not sharing with your neighbors. Downloads now seem to be the same speed as my T1 at school. They did have intermittent outages when Mydoom started up but that may have been coincidence.

The guy on the phone told me 708/128. I was like, what are you kidding? I have 1.5/256 now. I would be downgrading. Then I heard they use PPPoE too? Yuck!

I've noticed my friends with cable don't have half as many outages as me.

Out here they made the switch most places on the first of this year so I guess that they will get to you soon. My seven systems here at home are tied to it with no problem.

I have to take into consideration that COVAD has just declared my DSL circuit of nearly four years "not feasible for DSL service."

Now if it is in fact "broken," which I believe is horsesh!t. Will Verizon fix it [for free?]

Well if you qualify for the service they will put in their own equipment I presumme. They don't charge for that part as far as I know.

To throw on top of that, I found out they are illegally charging me county tax.
