| ok if I undersatnd correctly from past posts partition magic can be used to combine partitions. i.e. A hard drive seperated into C and D can combimed into one partition.
ok so assume I have that correct here is another question. What if both partitions contain a Program Files directory?
I have 10 workstations each with a 40GB hardrive. They were initially setup as C about 10GB and D about 30GB. This was done before I was around. The problem is the C drives are always filling up with profiles and its a pain in the a** to delete them every so often. Also some of these machines have a Programs Files directory on both C and D as I started installing apps on D to help conserve space on C.

| If you are going to consolidate to partitions they you have your work cut out for you. You can either:
consolidate the progams files into one and then edit the registry entries for the probram files moved to reflect their new location as well as correct all shortcuts to those programs.
Or
Uninstall and reinstall the programs being moved. Much simpler but can cause a loss of data.
In any case make sure you backup both partions before changing the partitions using partion magic or you just might lose everything. | |

| Thanks,
What I can do is use this program I got called app mover. Its a piece of freeware and works very well. I then have to get my director to purchase partition magic which shouldn't be that difficult. I will do a test run on one of the workstations. I am not too concerned because the workstations are used for classes and open access so if something goes wrong I just reinstall everything.
You can check out app mover here if you're interested.
Thanks again | |

| With partition magic, you can move space from the D drive and make sure C drive bigger. | |

| Partition magic only changes partition sizes. It does not move data from one partition to another. Therefore by default your limitation is no partition can be smaller than its data. So having two folders with the same name is not a problem. Secondly the file structure must be intact. You must pass scandisk on win9x or chkdsk on NT/2k/XP otherwise it aborts sometimes without an understandable error. It also fully understands linux partitions. | |

ok So can it do what I intended in combining 2 partitions into one 40 GB partition?

| Just make sure you don't have programs in the registry that point to "D" drive before you delete "D" drive. If you slapped something there and your computer uses this program on start up - well.. your going to have fun trying to straighten all that out. | |

| Yes what Redstar said, otherwise you will be fine. | |

It's been a while since I used it but from memory I don't think it can. You would have to delete D: then use it to expand C:. |
