Just wondering what everyone thinks about this http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/0...y.ap/index.html

Well my 1st observation is that no one has replied to this yet. No opinion? Probably just a case of not wanting to offend anyone by speaking their true feelings?

I have to tend to agree with their basic point, that scholarships (or anything else) should not be awarded on the basis of skin color alone (or primarily). We often see these types of scholarships etc that are only open to specific ethnic groups etc. But if one were offered to "whites only", why is it that that seems so absurd and offensive? That's one I can't seem to figure out. Why is it ok to have Black History Month, and the Image Awards, the Latin Grammy's, etc., but people would freak in horror if we had the White Oscars etc?? Why is excluding "white" people ok now?
I also find it very refreshing and interesting that the student responsible is of Puerto Rican descent and not "white", as one would've assumed.

Btw, the school is only about 20 miles from here, but a quick boat trip across Narragansett Bay... Our little state making national news once again, but not for a corrupt mayor or the like for a change..

Ill reply to this. My thought on it? Anyone see "Remember the Titans", with Denzel Washington? If not, you should. Its worth the 3 bucks to rent to learn a priceless lesson.

I think they're making an excellent point. Your race should have no bearing on your eligibility for government-funded scholarships either way. Now, if an individual, or private organization wants to create a scholarship that discriminates, that's their business. I don't agree with it, but it's their money to spend as they wish.

I think it's ironic that the kid who started this is going to school based on a Hispanics only scholarship. He's fighting the very thing that he is taking advantage of. Sounds like a typical Republican to me.

We have a university in our city that is 80% black. They have whites only scholorships because they are forced to have at least 25% whites attend the school by 2006.

"Minority" is a relative term.

Doubtful, it's more along the lines of really caring less about the topic. (and no I didn't reply to the topic, I replied to your observation)

Interesting point curiousgeorge especially your last line. One of the professors at the local state university told me last month that senior citizens get to go to university for a $100 registration fee. They don't have enough old people graduating I guess.

Wow, Chris, that was a post I enjoyed reading. It was in a language I understand and everything. It was lucid, even. How did youdo that?

So what else is new? It's only special treatment for other people that irritates most. They will gladly make an exception for their own group.
