Please help,

I have 2 HD, C was running XP and D is W2000. I reinstalled XP on the top C. I moved all of the applications to D before I reinstalled XP. When it finished installing, I again moved all application back to C from D.

what happened was some program works, some don't

How can I fix those programs that don't work
without installing or dload them?

Most important, where have my old email gone?

I would appreciate if you can share your experiences.

Thanks

The reason why some of the apps might not be working is because many programs write entries in the registry that are needed and also some applications will put files in various places other then the application directory. So you will need to reinstall those for them to work. As for your emails they are stored in the documents and settins directories for each user. Since you didn't mention reformating I am going to assume that you still have your old documents and settings directories in place for your old installations accounts and also that you are using Outlook Express for your email client.

If that is the case then find your old account and navigate to the the C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\microshit\ and then copy over the files in this outlook directory to your new account you made for your new install.(make sure your account has admin priviliges)

OK this is most likely all wrong but hey what can I say? I slightly retarded.

so you did a complete reinstall of XP. well that is going to roll everything back to factory settings.

so all the games have to be reinstalled.
if you are lucky and moved all the files back to where they were, you might be able to retain your settings. but i dont see that as likely. you might have been better off to have left all your programs on C and re-installed XP.

that wouldnt have saved you the trouble of reinstalling your games, but you would have a better chance of keeping your settings or any saved games you might have.

i dont think XP gives you the option of reinstalling over an existing install like win98 did. it always wants to repair instead. but i dont know of many people who had any luck at all repairing XP this way.

as far as e-mails go, i have pretty much gone to internet based e-mail.

for one thing i dont pay for internet access because i have nocharge.com

but i find that if i want to save something i get, its easier to save the contents as a text or word processor file of some sorts.

i have only really lost information once and that was when i was at msn.com and during one of their upgrades there was a problem importing the old address book. i think it was right about the time when IE 4 was coming out.

after that fiasco, i put all email addys i want to hang on to in an excel file...

All files(word, excel, power point) have disappeared except those in administrator's documents.

I'm using Office XP(Outlook 2002). My old personal address is totally lost

All names in contact list are wiped out.

so, do I still need to reinstall Office XP?

Thanks

Outlook 2002 should have stored the emails and contacts in a PST file. Do a search *.PST on all your harddrives.

if your old office files are intact, you could try to reinstall outlook.

then goto the file menu and try to import the old addy book.

you will have to designate a directory (in office 2000 anyway) because outlook wont search whole drives. but they will find and convert addy books from several diff. email programs.

by default, i believe that when reinstalling office, it saves personal files that can be retrieved by the new install. but if not, the manual import function should do it.

you could do as enforcer says and search for your pst files or whatever format the address files are in then copy them to a separate directory to make sure that the new outlook install doesnt have a conflict with it. then after the install of outlook, you could import the address book manually.
