Hello to everyone. It's been awhile since I visited, but I have a computer problem, and I decided to get ya'lls advice.
I am currently in the process of going to school for my BA. I brought an Office 2003 CD from my Professor for $6. When I was preparing to install it on my computer,it tells me I need either Windows 2000 or higher OS. Presently I am still using Windows 98SE. I'm thinking it's time for a upgrade. I have been searching ebay hoping to win a copy of Windows 2000 Professional upgrade, but then I am wandering. Since you all are such good computer people, which to do you advise as better upgrade for my home computer, in order to install Office 2003? Should I go for an Windows 2000 upgrade or Windows XP?
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Lillian

What kind of hardware are you currently running? WindowsXP is not too friendly with some older systems.

right now I have a 7.something hard drive, 64 megs of memory, but it shows 56. Compaq Presario 7360
It has an AMD K6 at 500mhz, 52x24x52 cd burner, . I know I don't have the system requirements for XP right now, so I am trying to figure out between the two, which will be better and why.
thanks

XP will run on a AMD K6 at 500mhz, but not with 56 megs of Ram. ( i guess the Videocard graps 10 megs)

Computer-upgrade recommended, if you ask me.
I buy most of my Software at www.directdeals.com you will find Win2000 or WinXP very reasonable.
Good Luck!

A full Install is always recommended.
But you need more Memory for WinXP.

with 56 megs of Ram, it should run ok.
Recommended is a bit more. Another Stick of 64 megs will cost only $9.00, but will make a big difference.

64 megs will run it. i went to school and thats all they ran. it was slow but workable. their systems were practically identical to yours.
we also had 500 and 700 mhz celerons and that worked to. they had office 2000 on them.

as far as upgrade versas full install. ALWAYS do a full install. it will obviously not have any of the programs you had before, but you will be much better off if you do.

AND, XP is much more compatible with old hardware than 2000 is. in fact the main difference bet the two is the 175,000 different hardware components that XP is supposed to be compatible with.

in your case, i wouldnt worry, 2000 will probably work for you. i strongly suggest the addition of RAM thou. boot up times on those 64 Mb machines was a good 3-4 minutes especially if you joined a domain. we also install novell on it. that really really slowed the boot process.

Well I just installed Windows 2K in my friends Presario 7360 and Office 2003. First you will need more Ram so the PC be faster. Then the most important is the Video Driver for Win 2K, Compaq does not have a driver for it but you can downloaded (download it before you begin the reformat).

Windows XP will drag in this type of PC, because it is slow.

lillian40 I don't want to sound like I'm having a go here but you are asking simple questions which can be found the on web and here you are claiming to be working on your MCSE.....a little search will go a long way......you can never have enough RAM so chuck in as much as your BIOS/Motherboard will support!!!
