Hey guys, long time lurker, haven't posted in awhile. Anyway since last I posted on here somewhat regularly I managed to land a gig in the IT field.

Over the summer I started working in the IS Dept. of a private university. I think I remember others that post here working in a similar environment. I guess this is a role-call of sorts, just wondering who else here works in the same sort of place as me. As we know administering a University network has it's own unique challenges so I want to know who's brain to pick when I run into a wall.

Thanks guys, hope to chat more over time.

Hey Format Kid,

I'm a network admin at a university. You're right, universities are completely different than a corporate environment.

We have 2,500 faculty and staff, about 40 labs, and about 250 master classrooms.

If you run into any situations, I'll try to help.

whoa, you're at a much bigger operation than myself, i can imagine many of the same situations arise though. I'll have to get some questions together for you, our network is growing pretty rapidly so I'm just trying to get some input on how other people are managing.

One question that comes to mind is how you guys are set up with network access in dorms, which I've found to be somewhat tricky, walking the line between the rights of the students and what is flooding our WAN and backbone. We can continue the discussion in PM if you'd prefer of course.

We're a pretty big school (23,000 students). We have 58 people in our IT division. That doesn't include the techs and lab assistants that are hired by the individual departments.

I forgot about all of our dorms, campus apartments, and campus greek row. All of that is handled by someone else in our division.

But I can tell you, we lock them down pretty good. Internet access is a priveledge. Being a state university, we're required to restrict what students can and can't do online.

When you run into things, just IM me. I'll be happy to help.
