| Hi,
Recently, I am having a strange poblem with internet explorer and windows explorer, when ever I try to open "My Comupter" it goes in a search mode and takes more than a minute to show the list of drives, but clicking my document or any other link does not take that long. I formatted the drive and reinstalled only Win XP Profesional and Office 2003 and still have the same problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

| Typically, how long to show the drives, as opposed to the length of time to show My Documents? Also, do you notice any difference depending on how many other programs are open at the time?
Have you checked your msconfig startup items in XP? YOu may have a lot of programs running in the background that will slow everything down.

| Do you have any network drives mapped that it is trying to resolve? Also any old printers that no longer exist? | |

| Make sure all M$ critical updates are installed, flash your BIOS with most current version, and run a disk scan.
How old is the computer? If you just reinstalled XP, the hard drive might be getting ready to die on you.
Hope that helps. | |

| Yeah I was thinking defrag but not if it's a new install.... usually though when it's slow like that it is trying to reconect "something" that either no longer exists or is having trouble reaching.
Spyware? | |

| Sbragib,
1) Are you on a network?
This refers to network resources & doesn't apply to you..but it may give you a digging tool.

2) If you are, can you tell us what type? (Novell has similiar issues.)
3) Also, have you installed sp 2 on XP?
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...%5BLN%5D;811113
4) Another issue I've heard is that if you have network drives in your profile, it will lag due to checking with the password protected ones for permission, etc. Disconnecting the network drives eased the load time.
The very fact you're able to access your own docs instantly may point to a network communication issue....but if you're not on a network, that shoots my whole theory to hell.
P.S. I just noticed 6slave6's reply & realized mine was a rehash of his.

| First of all sorry for replying so late, had to go out of town for some emergency.
1. I am not connected to any network
2. System is around 2 years old, but until recently was working like a breaze.
3. I checked msconfig, killed all the un-necessary prog, with no improvement, then formatted the dirve and reinstalled only Win XP Prof and MS Office 2003 Prof. (Ofcourse the drivers are also installed)
4. After reinstalling did not connectto internet, so no spyware or virus,
5. no SP2, not yet
6. Had a USB card reader connected, but after reinstalling the OS, took it off, just to be sure if that was the culprit.
Thanks for help and still looking for a solution......

| Thanks for responding. It might then be a hardware issue which I'm not experienced enough in to add any insight. Hope it works out for you! |
