Backups - 8mm Tape Drives
|
|
|
| Hi all,
How would I know if 2 tape drives are compatible? I mean if they are both 8mm, are they compatible or do they have their own proprietary write/read formats?
For example:
http://www.unylogix.com/data_storage/tapes.html#ait3
and
http://www.unylogix.com/data_storag....html#UND-40000
Also, do people mostly do their backups with tapes? Why not a USB 2.0 with a 400 MBps transfer rate? I'm using an Exabyte 8mm with 20GB capacity and 80GB data to backup. It's such a hassle to switch tapes in the morning and also slowing down the file server at office hours.

But what would you be transferring it too? An external hard drive???
You should be scheduling your backups for non-production hours.
Also, what type of backups are you doing each night? Full backups every night (yikes!) or a normal backup at the beginning of the week and incremental the rest of the week?

| Yeah, I scheduled a Full on Fridays but by Monday morning it'll ask for another tape (takes 4 tapes altogether) and the rest of the backup job would be unforunately done during office hours.
I have about 80GB of data to backup. If I were to use an external USB 100GB, let's say, with USB 2.0 transfer rate I'll be done with a Full backup in about 4 minutes.

| The rate that you copy data is more dependent on what you are copying it to. USB 2 has a fast transfer rate but tapes or external hard drives don't have a write speed that is that fast.
However, you can backup the data from disk-to-disk, then disk-to-tape. Or your company will have to spring for a tape auto-loader. |
