| quote: Winsock
"Windows Sockets (Winsock) is a TCP/IP extension to the Windows Applications Interface (API). It essentially allows Windows applications to run independently of the hardware underneath. It is just like the device independence you gain with a Windows graphics program -- it can run independently of your video board."

This probably isn't the clearest definition. I suspect Winsock was the forerunner of the HAL which is part of 2k & xp.
I couldn't find the orig. article that I was looking at that descibed it best in how it fits w/ WINS, etc.
Maybe someone can give you a cleaner view.

P.S. This might put winsock a little more in perspective:
microsoft.com
I wish I was able to narrow it down to 3 sentences for you..

Not quite . Winsock is Microsoft's TCP/IP stack. Winsock is short for Windows Sockets.

I had a book open defining HAL & thought maybe it was the same.
