| I have a Sony VAIO, about three years old, running XP Home, P4. I turn it on and get nothing on the monitor. I look at the power LED lights and the drive light turns on for around 10 seconds and turns off. The other(CPU) light flicks on when I power up and stays off. I don't hear anything working except the CPU and power supply fans, no other sounds, no beeps, no CPU sounds, nothing. Any ideas? | |

| If CPU and PS fans are running and you aren't getting any POST error beeps, I would guess it's your video card. | |

| You may have an output plug to plug in a regular monitor.
You may also try to boot into safe mode this may Help you.

| I have tried a brand new video card and nothing. I also changed the CMOS battery, checked every connection inside and outside for good connection, a different monitor, checked the power supply for voltage which is fine. I also took out the CPU and placed it back. | |

| The only thing left is your mobo. | |

| I am getting a clickig sound that doesn't sound normal from the Power Supply when I press the power button. I am going to try a new Power Supply before I hit the Mobo. I was and still am hoping it isn't the mobo even though its easy to replace. | |

| Try to place the H-drive into another unit.
if the Drive works then sh*t it sounds like it may be the Board.
At least if it's the board you won't have to reload all those prog's and app's that we all manage to accumulate over a few years.
Good luck
Cheers

If the harddrive is bad, it shouldn't prevent the BIOS screen at least appearing on the monitor.
If he has to replace the board, unless it is an exact replica he may have to reinstall the OS and everything (OS may become unstable)

| Actually, Deja-Vue had a great tip for replacing the CPU w/ XP. I was hoping to try it myself soon, but haven't had time. (I'm not going to post the link. I like my head still on my shoulders.. )
"One tip I have come up with resolves Windows XP’s inability to allow for a motherboard change without reinstalling. There is a way around this. Before you change the motherboard go into device manager and change the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". You do this by going to update driver and then selecting "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install." Then select the "Standard....Controller."
After you have changed the controller, shut down the PC and change the motherboard. You should now be able to boot without the blue screen. Now load the new motherboard drivers including the new IDE controller driver.
I havent really tried this yet, got this Tip from MaximumPC...."

| I just tried to do it & lost my nerve when the hd sounded like a drunk crowd at a baseball game.
Deja's directions are letter perfect, but I would recommend trying it on an install you don't care about first.

I think the word 'drunk' was redundant in that sentance.

| Ok. Just went thru the whole box. Checked the power supply with one that works, same problem. Checked HD with one that works, same problem. I'm thinking Mobo.
Note: I tried the HD on another box that works fine and I got the POST but screen goes black afterwards, HD is spinning but no screen. Whats up with this? Could my HD be bad too? |
