I was having some problems with IE6 SP1 in a way that the pages would look totally messed up. I even had to install Netscape so I could surf the web.

Anyway, so I decided to reinstall IE. The thing is that now after the re-installation I can´t even find the IE icon on the desktop anymore or anywhere else for that matter.

I tried launching Windows Update which brings up IE, but the page immediately freezes, and the only way to fix it is by killing it through Task Manager. I really do not know what´s happening here.
Re-installation didn´t seem to work.

Has anyone come across anything like this? I certainly could use some help here.

Cheers!

These people had similiar issues. They had some good things to try.

Either way, I would switch to Mozilla or Opera. The browser windows aren't as smooth, though.

P.S. The link referred to www.evolt.org to roll back to IE 5.5 SP2, if desired.

What OS are you running?

If it's XP, have you tried a system restore?

Also in XP, you can right-click on the desktop, select Properties, select the Desktop tab, then click on the Customize Desktop... button.

From there you can select the icons you want displayed on the desktop: Internet Explorer, My Documents, My Network Places, and My Computer.

Hope that helps.

I´ve fixed the problem. It was actually a bunch of viruses and spywares that seemed to have taken control of the whole thing.

Who would have thought?? Internet Explorer vulnerable to viruses and spywares....that´s unheard of........NOT!!!

I certainly could have used the "format-the-hard-drive" shortcut, but it wasn´t my computer, so I had to make sure I wouldn´t lose anything.

After playing with Spybot, HijackThis, Norton and the registry for a while, I ended up reinstalling XP and that worked fine.
Mind you that simply reinstalling XP would be a waste of time. Finding a way to get rid of all that crap was actually the key factor.

Anyway, I wish to thank you all for the help. You guys rock!

Take care!

There's another very useful tool if you find your browser is hijacked, it's called CW Shredder. Hijackthis recommends using it if you find that situation.

I've had opportunity to explain this to a lot of people. It's amazing that this hasn't made it to mainstream news yet.
