| A recent poll “how much do you sleep” turned out to be very popular. So here is another poll that many computer professionals will find to be close to hart. For those of us working all day on a computer its very important to find time to exercise.
How often do you work out?
I have now been working out for at least once a week, trying to go twice a week. I have the pretty good gym right in my basement and still can’t find time to go there 2 days a week. I usually run on a treadmill for 40 minutes and then use home gym with weight training for 30 minutes. It’s not a lot of exercising, but I am happy that since I started in December last year, I have not put on any weight, even lost a few pounds.

| Well I do karate a few times a week (great exercide) and also play pickup basketball one to two times per week about. I have that free time because I'm not working full time - just the weekends at the local video store - and am starting up school again to work on my AAS and of course more certs. | |

| i jog 2 hrs a day, do 50 sit-ups per-day and on the weekends, I like to go fish. I'm a bit of an obese child (weighing 225 a month ago and now 200) and it's funny when these people underestimate me in running, especially those guys who sprint like hell in the beginning and then end up dead tired just 2 pass u. then u pass them nice and slowly to put them in shame. | |

| I do yoga about three times a week and some basic muscle-strengthening exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.) most of the other days.
I need to get in some tougher aerobic exercise (yoga is aerobic, too), so I'm thinking of picking up a treadmill.

| I stair-step up to the second floor a couple of times a day. :-) | |
|
| I did some push-up, crush, weight, jog 3 miles every other day for about a 1 1/2 hrs.

| I bike ride once a week, swim twice a week, and try to get at least 3 days of tae-bo in. I don't do well in a gym. I have a wonderful free-weight system in the garage that is just perfect for drying laundry If I'm going to pedal, I'd prefer my scenery change, same with walking on a treadmill. | |
| CatWoman502 2001-08-20, 7:48 am |
| I'm with Chevy138 and Fatherboard. About the only work out I get is moving PCs around and walking around the plant helping users. Though I do plan to start walking after work this week. I have put on some ex baggage over the last six months...he he. | |

| My eyes get a really good workout from staring at this screen about 14hrs a day..
I've given up on getting motivated for a bout a week, then always ending up at my computer when I should be lifting those weights.
| fizz85 2001-08-20, 10:41 am |
| I am in the Army so... it is not by choice. That kinda takes the fun out of it.
I do PT (Physical Training)5 or 6 days a week for about an hour at a time.
I spend more time thinking how to avoid it doing it then actually doing it.
LOL | |

| Playing soccer (on two different teams each week), walking with the wife at least every other day, and basic muscle exercises (crunches and pushups) usually every day. Looking forward to getting my Bowflex from storage once we move into the bigger place this fall.

| I work out at least three times a week. I weight lift followed by at least a 6 mile run. I also like to hop on the eliptical machine especially during a thunderstorm and I cannot run. I also like to ride my bike and tote a pretty heavy Meade telescope thru the bean fields near my house on clear nights. | |

| I lift weights approximately four times per week. Fortunately, the local YMCA is about 1/4 mile from my place of business and I can work out during my lunch hour. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't work out nearly as often.
Need to start doing some aerobic exercises though. I'm not as young as I use to be and the ole stomach is starting to grow.
| Webmaster 2001-08-24, 3:04 pm |
| I found that for me the proximity to the gym has no effect on how ofter I go there. I used to live in a apartment community for almost 3 years and we've had a gym right there and still I only used it once or twice a week. Right now I have good gym right in my house and still only using it once a week.
I just need a motivation. Need to push myself to go exercise.
By the way, just finished my 1 hour workout.

| I'm about 3-4 times per week myself. I start heavy training this Friday to pack on some muscle before the summer toning kicks in.
I did the mornings, but school has me not get home until 10 -1030, so its tough. I go when I can go right now.

| Aerobics
Run to North Suite, Sales Offices, trouble-shoot whiny account exec's laptops several times a day: 250 yards/day.
Run to parking lot where Big Boss has again managed to lock up his phone by spilling Evian Water all over it. Replace phone: 500 yards/week
Roll chair from workstation to server because company is too cheap to upgrade server to W2K, so Computer Management actions are limited: 18 yards/day.
Strength Training
Lift ancient, 50 lb. monitor, transport to storage room.
Move P150 Workstation from under receptioninsts counter to discover why user "can't get Internet" (mini-tower was shoved against modesty panel so hard that the cat5 cable was bent out of it's socket).
Dexterity Training
Remove remains of a melted toblarone from an external back-up drive in the graphics-production department. "Mac users are *so* cute."

Since I had back surgury I have to be careful.
I used to instruct Tae Kwan Do and Hapkido "second degree black belt in each" 3 days a week but the Doctor ruled out Martial Arts after the surgury "I still do a bit of hapkido to stay sharp".

| I'm on a split body workout..heres what I do
Monday - Lower Body
Tuesday - *OFF*
Wednesday - Cardio
Thursday - Upper Body
Friday - Lower Body
Saturday - *OFF*
Sunday - Upper body
This gives my body a day off to recover before I target those muscles again. To many people suffer from DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).
My diet is 5 meals a day paced every 3 hours (approx). Broken down into a 50/30/10 split meaning 50% of my calories from protein, 30 from carbs, and 10% from fat.
I find myself becoming very picky in what I eat but so far this has payed off for me quite well. Currently at 10% body fat 6'10 170 lbs.

It was really really tough at first to change my diet..but making a meal plan with approximately 600 calories a meal(healthy meals) kinda made it easier...this is during the time i was bulking....i.e. gaining muscle mass. (almost 3 years ago i weighed 128..extremely skinny)
for example
chopped boneless breast chicken
chopped tomatoes
chopped lettuce
low fat mayo
dijon mustard
low fat tortilla shell
makes a healthy and yummy meal with approximately 60 grams of protein, 40 grams of carbs and 4 grams of fat
Not sure if most people know..this is how you calculate calories
for every gram of protein and carbs you multiply it by 4, for fat grams, by 9
so
60X4=240
40X4=160
4 X9=36
so just that is 436 calories..throw in some skim milk or protein shake..and your talking a healthy meal

You need to go more to start enjoying it. If you go 3+ times a week it becomes totally addictive. I used to go 5 or 6 times a week and I loved it. As soon as I started to drop back to once or twice a week (work commitments) it just became a drag. Take along an MP3 player, or plug yourself in to MTV if your gym has it, is also a useful distraction technique.
As for stress days I find the pub a better solution!

| 40+ lbs increase is pretty good in 3 years Poorboy. I bulked for around a year and gained about 14 lbs by steadily increasing the weights I was shifting but then I hit a kinda plateau and didn't seem to go anywhere after that. | |

| I started gaining weight the wrong way...I wasn't watching what I ate, etc and found myself getting the old man's gut
So after that I looked up a couple forums which really put many things into perspective when working out. Believe it or not, getting healthy and built is not hard...it just takes determination and a strict diet (i.e. no midnight munchie runs to taco bell

Just went up to Aviemore to try it out for the first time. Trouble was the slope was very icy in places and snowboards don't work too well on ice - they tend to go severely out of contol and ice is pretty hard substance to land on at 50mph! As I recall we had to down a good few in the local bars that night to numb the pain...
Good fun all the same. Anyway I'm off to the Alps in couple of weeks for some real snow!

| Last month I joined a community fitness center - the answer to a question I first asked about 45 years ago. Around classes, work and studying for M$ exams I have been able to work/out for about two hours each time four times a week. When my twenty-ish daughter, the athlete in the family, came home for the Holidays, she critiqued my workout and strengthed the procedures. Today I felt the best during and after my workout that I have for all the times I have been exercising. My wife started working/out about a year ago, she has had marvelous success, and she is very encouraging and supportive of my efforts. I'm hoping to fill my first month's dancecard on the Cybex I circuit this coming weekend and then graduate to either the Cybex II circuit or to some exercises using freeweights. (I will have earned a "free" tee-shirt for filling my activity chart.) This will probably be up to the acting director of our fitness center. My three-months-for-$99 membership will run/out, and I'll try a few other "gym" recruitment come-ons before I settle down for the long haul. This has been a marvelous experience - I just have to be careful to not let it prevent me from accomplishing another long-term objective, learning to play the guitar. I wish good health and good success to all who try to be and maintain their health. | |

Martin Luther King Day [USA]
Dear Prezbedard,
I thought I had posted dozens of times back near when I first registered, and figured they had just gotten lost... But maybe I was busy posting elsewhere, and just never got around to posting here. I have been very happily busy attending classes, studying books and exercises toward the M$ exams I have been passing (only 70-219 and 70-224 to go to have my MCSE 2000) and working/out. Oh, and I work 50-60 hours a week as a technician, so the time just melts away. One of my other hats is as a Certified Public Accountant, and I'm going to have to produce some financial statements (and some tax returns, too!) before long, so my life is just a bowl of cherries. We had a beautiful, wonderful Family gathering in the middle of the USA for Thanksgiving, so we've been able to travel a little bit, too.
Who/What do you know about some decent cruises to Iceland from NY, Boston or Maine? I'm hoping to take the Family on such a trip in the Spring/Summer. I think those ships usually have a nice fitness center onboard, and I have seen TV ads featuring the beautiful rock-climbing walls up the side of the smokestack. How would that be for a workout?

The Cruise routes out of the North east mostly do Burmuda, Scandinavian ( Iceland ) Cruises are normally out of Europe. What sucks about Cruising ( fnarr fnar ) is that they dont let you spend much time on land, as the docking fees are too high and they want you to spend your money on the Ship. |
