I am currently in my 2nd year in college,
(prolly will take 5 to get out) and I was wondering what I could do to prepare myself for the job market in 3-4years. I am currently studying for the A+ exam, and the Network+ shortly after that. I would like to hear some recommendations on what certs to go for, etc. I would also like to stay away from certs that expire. This is because I wont even be applying for jobs for atleast 3 yrs. Having them expire before they can come into major use would be useless IMO. I am heading into the career path of a Network Admin. but I am not entirely sure. Any input would be much appreciated.

you're in college, get drunk and meet some rich women to take care of you=)

J/K
I'd recommend that you definitely figure out what you are looking to do. Networking? Cisco? M$?, database admin? project management?
Each one of those carries a different path than the other...set a goal and go after it

Well it depends on what you are looking to do. I would first concentrate on the basics like you are now with Comptia as they do not expire but do get upgrades every several years. MS does retire exams(retiring of an exam isn't the same as expiring) go for a couple MS certs. Those OSes will be around for quite some time and employers will want potential employees to know older technology besides new technology. I would also sugguest studying linux some as it is on the rise now and demand is growing.

Thanks for the input. I am just so worried of getting out there and being a grocery bagger (nothing wrong with that ) for the next decade or so. Is the IT industry coming around? Or is it just going overseas? Also, should I start applying for a internship? Never done it before so I wouldnt even know where to start. Do I just go in there and say I want to work for free LOL?

Try to get some work experience now while studying for the certs you are taking at the moment.Preferably in the field of IT or computers, it may help you decide what to do that best suits you.The real world experince can be a great help. As for the IT industry, I think it has now become a victim of its own success. The technology has outpaced us to some extent, but companys are watching the pennys at the moment, no one wants to make bad IT decisions.

As far as internships go your college should be able to help you out with that.
