I've now discovered why my norton AV was not updating automatically or that I could not down load the norton intelligent updater or security patches from microsoft. It was their service pack 4.. I had installed it a few days previous to realising my machine had problems.
Having uninstalled the service pack 4 and gone back to 3, all is now OK again. Has anyone else had similar probs?

What version of NAV are you using?

I've installed this service pack on my W2K machines and am using NAV Corp 7.6 and am not having any troubles with definition updates. All appears to be working well.

I'm using NAV 2001 version 7.07.23D
and Norton personal firewall 2001 version 3.0.4.91

My guess is and it is a guess, you'll need to upgrade to a newer version of the software for it to work properly with SP4.

I did find this item on Symantec's support site concerning Windows 2000 SP4 and Norton Internet Security 2001.

Windows 2000 SP4 and Norton Internet Security 2001

Situation:
You are running Norton Internet Security 2001 (NIS) on a Windows 2000 computer, and you have just upgraded your operating system to Service Pack 4 (SP4). Now, you cannot access the Internet.

Solution:
There is an incompatibility between Windows 2000 SP4 and NIS 2001. This incompatibility causes NIS 2001 to block all access to the Internet.

A LiveUpdate that corrects the compatibility problem between Windows 2000 SP4 and NIS 2001 is available. To resolve the problem, run LiveUpdate by clicking the LiveUpdate button and following the prompts. If possible, run LiveUpdate before upgrading to Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

There was a thread in the A+ forum earlier this summer about NAV 2001 and it talked about the definition updates no longer working, despite the person that paid for them still having time left on their subscription. I believe the ultimate solution for them was to upgrade to NAV 2003.
