Allright, this is a new one on me. I installed the newest IomegaWare for Windows 98, and it seriously corrupted my OS files. NOT the Registry. I did a dirty install, and everything is working fine, except that there is no mouse pointer on my screen. I can negotiate with keyboard, but my mouse nothing. There is literally no pointer on my screen. Any ideas? I would really have to wipe and reload.

Have you rebooted an checked the mouse is connected properly before it starts up.

Check to see if a mouse is viewable in the device manager.

What do you mean "I did a dirty install"

Perhaps it means she just overided the current OS instead of a nice format and then installation.

No, the mouse isn't the problem, three different mice (1 serial, 1 USB, 1 PS/2), same thing. Even if you don't have a mouse attached to your system, there is still a pointer sitting in the middle of the screen...you just can't use it. There is absolutely no pointer on my screen.

I have also tried clicking on the desktop to see if the pointer was "submarining", but no go. I guess the next thing to try is to delete the GDI and reinstall it.

And yes, ruscorp, I did mean a reinstall over the existing OS. I guess I should have called it a maintenance install, but that's far too glamorous a term for something that hardly ever works!

We ususally call it a "repair installation".

If you been through that many different mice it can't be that then.

Perhaps a nice format would help? However first try deleting the GDI and replacing it with one from a system where you know it's working.

My apologies to enforcer, who was (believe it or not ) actually right! I looked in the device manager and it said that vmouse.vxd was not correctly loading. I replaced it, and now I have a pointer.

I got the "dirty install" from the horrible hellhole known as "working at Dell".

Congrats on fixing the problem.

Thanks for letting me know where the term "dirty install" came from.

Now I understand.

Good to see you got the problem fixed too.

This is a problem that cannot be fixed. You'll probably have to throw your computer away.

I'm sorry, you must be confused. The mac forum is here.

It's a mac? Well that just completely definitely solves this riddle. I knew it! It's a mac. Says it all really.

Shit! that's ruined my reputation.

Might even get a nomination in next years Best Technical Contributor Award Poll.

Spid you'd better watch out, there's someone after your title.
