Need Advice on security field
|

| Hi,
I have A+ and Network+ certs. My question is, if I want to get into the security field, how should I do it? What certs should I go for next and what should I go for in the future (checkpoint, cisco, etc)? Also, where should I be looking for work now in security with no experience? And finally I'm thinking about going for my MCP or MCSA. With someone wanting to get into security, would these cert(s) be a waste of time? Thanks!!!

| Hate to be the bearer of sad news, but the security field is as quiet as most other IT areas right now in many places. With A+ & Net+ you are truthfully at the bottom of the feed chain and will need a fair bit of experience before branching into the security field. I suggest that Security+ is a starting point, however I would suggest you do a few MCPs for MCSA and then build on that to MCSA + Security
Here.
I would think a good idea would to build on MCSA + Security with perhaps CCNA to get a good idea of how the real world works after the MS certs and to also add a little credibility to your resume when you go job hunting. Unfortunately most places will only hire you as a network tech unless you have solid security background, however from my experience with incompetent admins out there you will probably get a bit of security work wherever you go.
As a side note, there are more than a few newbies who have recently gained Sec+ certification out there trying to sell themselves as security specialists - that is going to do a lot of harm to the Sec+ certification if too many employers get sucked in by them

| U need experience, high level certifications and skill.
Everybody want to get in security, but it is not for everybody.

| Ok what you want to do is get either your Checkpoint or Cisco PIX specialist cert. Then you want to look for an entry level Firewall admin position. This is going to be the easist way into the security field for you.
Don't expect to just jump into it though, it'll take you a while. Also you're going to need to look at what's going on in your area if you aren't willing to relocate.
One last thing, if you're wanting into security because you think it's a stable or lucrative field don't bother. Only think about it if you actually have the passion to keep up with it, otherwise you'll be stuck at that Firewall admin level forever. |
