| Hi,
I have a laptop, returned my one of our staff with a password on it, the GENTLEMAN is not working with us now and boss wants a file retrived from it.
Is there a way I can get in, or reset the password.
Help !!!
Thanks in Advance | |
|
| Don't you have admin privs? | |
|
| Oh yeah - use the install disk to get in if you have no privs | |

| No admin prevs,
The Laptop was originally installed with Win ME, he installed Win XP on it without telling us.

| Downloaded the boot floppy. The system starts booting from the floppy and half way thru say boot failure (or something to that effect)and stops.
any other way around ?????

LOL.
How the heck would you do that? That is completely new to me.
sbragib,
See if you can get a copy of Winternals ERD Commander. ( expensive).
Also, there is several Linux-bootdisks available on the Net, that will help you re-setting the password.
Last thing to try is to pull the Hard drive, slave it to a PC running Win2000 or XP, ( Hard drive- adapter required)then delete the SAM (passwords) file.
(the file is hidden).( you lose all accounts on the machine)
Winternals is the program of my choice, since it takes 5 minutes for any 2000/XP system to crack the password.

| Opps !! its 199$, I dont think, I can justify that for a permenant license for a fixed PC. I am looking at the linux alternative and tried one mentioned by jkhnwspec
It stops halfway thru the booting process, guess will have to look for it somewhere else.
Thanks | |

| Sorry to see that didn't work for you, I had high hopes it would. Check this link out too, it might be a better one. It does point back to the one I mentioned earlier. Be sure to read the tips entirely before trying them.

| Do you have a XP disk available? If so try using that to boot it up instead of floppies. | |

| if you just need to retrieve a file, boot from a win98 disk run NTFSDOS this will allow you to read NTFS
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/f...e/NTFSDOS.shtml
If it is a file larger than 1.44Mb then you will need to slave the Harddrive in another PC (W2K or XP unless you use NTFSDOS), you can get 2.5" to 3.5" adapters so you can use laptop drives in normal PC's
HTH
Good Luck | |

....and then..what,RussS ?
He still needs the Admin password to enter the Recovery Console.

| This sounds really stupid, but did you try logging in as Administrator with no password?
Cheers,

|
| Don't do the Recovery Console - Do the Repair Installation trick. You should then be asked for a NEW admin password. | |

| Thanks all, finally managed to log-in as an administrator.
Now the story.
1. The Linux floppy did not work cause the senior engineer who had the laptop in his custody does not understand that there is a world beyond GUI interface. If text is displayed then the result is system not working, without even reading what is displayed on the screen.
2. If the logon screen does not show the Administrators name then the Admin account has been renamed and don’t bother to boot into safe mode to find out.
3. Never ask questions on the Tech forum asking for help without kicking the above mentioned Senior engineer is the ...
Thanks for letting me vent
The above mentioned engineer said he already tried to boot into the safe mode to log in as an administrator and could not do so. I assumed that there is a password for the admin account. Today after I took the laptop from him I pressed the F8 key to try and log in as administrator and know what, the logon screen has two accts for the login. 1 for admin and other with admin prevs. so I click admin acct and that’s it. there was no password. so i changed the other userids password and logged in. When this senior engineer retuned I told him the problem is solved (but not how he is still scratching his head) I told him I guessed the password and it worked.
And to say that he has an MSCE and couple of more certs, and me no big name cert...
Anyways THANKS A lot for all your help, in the process I learned a few things...

I agree, even though I am not one. One of those things that makes you go Hmmmm....

Thanks for coming back and posting the outcome. It helps to know what the solution was.

Well said enforcer. I couldn't agree with you more. Hopefully the senior engineer sbragib had to deal with isn't someone he has to report to or look up to as a mentor.

| OH NO !!!!
Thanks GOD for that. Actually I don’t work with the support guys at all. I am do Tech Analysis for the HW/SW that we buy (I work for a very big organization) for our internal use.
I have 13 years experience in IT field, but unfortunately no cert.
Anyway thanks for the support and letting me vent....
Have a nice day
