D)
Scrabble was invented by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts during the Great Depression. He wanted to create an enjoyable word game. Butts came up with the tile distribution after studying the front page of The New York Times to calculate the frequency with which vowels and consonants appeared in the English language. He hand-drafted the board on blueprints and pasted them to folding checker boards. The tiles were created in a similar fashion and pasted on balsa wood and cut to the size of the squares on the board.

The game started out as Lexico, then the name was changed to Criss-Cross Words; it was trademarked in 1948 under the name of Scrabble.
