| I like the pocketpc better than the palm os. In two places that I worked, one had palms, the other had pocketpcs. Syncing a pocket pc is much easier, plus there is much more usability with pocket pc. When I was at my last job, I was the pocket pc guy. Sure I had my share of problems, but I always had users keep their pocketpc's synced with their computer. That way, when the pocketpc went crazy, you just had to perform a hard boot and resync.
Another thing is that I liked pocket word and pocket excel. They port over decently to regular word and excel.
Just my $.02 worth. | |

Hmmmm, Heard of an iPac? Pocket PC is a type normally using the Intel xscale CPU and costing around $300-$500 U.S. Check Compaq, HP, Dell, Viewsonic, Toshiba for starters. They run a stripped down version of windows called Windows CE which competes with Palm OS so the software is different but the same. Think of it as sort of a handheld version of the windows versus Apple debates.
Palm OS based PDA are $100-
$400. I do Excel compatible spreadsheets on my Sony Clie (Palm OS) and hotsync with Office XP on my desktop. "Docs to Go" is used on Palm based systems where as Office for Pocket PC is used on the others. A friend has a Viewsonic Pocket PC but complains because it does not have a standby mode and if the batteries die you are dead without a new hotsync. My Clie backs up to a 128MB memory stick. In both cases you get what you pay for.
Here are some places to look.

| well i bought a palm m515 today. but i could still return it.
what i am asking what are the advantages and disadvantages of windows ce and palm OS
any help guys | |

| I can't really help you here. I just consider it personal preference. My clie does what I want in a handheld device and fits in my pocket. Thats what I wanted it for. I have laptops and desktops for other things. When I can talk to it like startrek then maybe I will worry about nitpick features. I use mine as a replacement for a daytimer that has more advanced features.
Studies show that after the new wears off that is what most people use them for. The mag's all say that is why palm OS is still number one. Many people don't need or are willing to pay for features that move into the notebook area. High end Palm and Palm based PDA's like the Sony's have moved into multimedia for new features, camera, mp3, phone, etc.

| It depends on what you want to pay. The high end PDA's are almost like PC's. Basic PDA's run the PALM OS and some of the high-end models run Windows 2002 for Pocket PC.
I have a Palm M130, a decent low-end color model.

| i am thinking of getting a windows CE pda instead of the one i have, they are the same price.
but one more question, if i have a program that works on palm will it work on windows ce, and does programs that work on your regular PC work on windows ce

| I eventually want to get one too. Unfortunately I know very little about them...will have to do some research. | |

| well...
I used to sell alot of pda's
as goofy as it seems, palms running "docs to go" sync up alot better w/microsoft office documents than do pocket pc (pocket word, pocket excel, etc.)
palms are alot more efficient per mhz & ram than m$ based palm os's too
an m515 is a good pda, depending on what you paid for it, last time I was pricing them, the dell axim seemed to be the best pocket pc based solution at the time....
pocket pc's are pretty but palm OS 5 is nice too for the money
like it was said before, alot of it just comes down to preference
in reference to your question if your palm programs will run on a pocket pc device;
it will be documented with the program, some will run on palm os, some will run on pocket pc (windows ce), some will run on both
p.s., I'm looking at the axim for purchase myself

| one more question
does regular windows apps work on windows ce
and is the Ipaq and good
and i paid $350 including tax for the palm m515 is that too much.
| format kid 2003-06-21, 11:23 am |
| nah, you can't just run a regular windows app on pocket pc some of them are ported to pocket pc OS though
that particular pda is alot cheaper on new egg
m515 on newegg
i always thought ipaqs were pretty cool
