I met a guy the other day and struck up a conversation.
After a few minutes it became evident that this person had considerable knowledge in the inner workings of computers, networking, and programming.
Being of proffesional bent I asked where he worked and lo and behold he was an unemployed welfare recipient and had never worked in IT at all.

Whats the point you say?

I know computers are fun and I would be "playing"ith them even if I weren't in IT but with this guys inherent knowledge and apparent comfort level with information technolgy why is he satisfied with barely subsistence living?
I was interviewing a prospective company who is thinking about opening an IT plant near where I live and his concern was getting our local people the right technical training, which I agree is important, but equally important and almost wholly neglected is getting the people with the right technical mindset, almost inate technical aptitude, and logical problem solving skills and then getting them to realize their potential, to teach them motivation somehow.
It is frustating for me to watch that kind of skill be wasted by a grown man who wants to do nothing more than write a utility to kick someone out of a chat room.
If properly motivated and directed it is untelling how far a person like this could go.

He could give me his knowledge since I seem to lack it.

On the flip side of that are the people I have met with formal computer training who know absolutely nothing about IT.

You know, I have met more than a few people that are exactly this way but what I have found is that they can't function socially. Not meaning that they aren't nice people or anything but they just put people off in their mannerisms or just don't like to be put under pressure or be relied upon in a responsible role. I know a guy who took all his mcse tests within a three week time period but he couldn't tell you the time of day if you ask him. He dresses like a complete slob and is very unkept. He sticks to fixing systems in a shop and doesn't even like to deal with the customers. There are quite a few others that I have met since entering into this industry.
