I use Wincleaner anti-virus software on my pc with Windows 2000. Recently it froze and the only way out I could see was to re-install my whole operating system seeing as repairing W2k only wiped out all that I had anyway.

My question to you all is this, how do I manually update my anti-virus manually where my live-updates fail cos I am using slightly out of date software? I have chased the helpdesk for this and all they have told me so far is to make a pointer to a temporary folder. I only know how to make proper folders and they are throwing DAT files both in ordinary and zipped up form at me.

Any advice please? DAT files are registry linked and I don't wanna mess with such things.

a faq page on the software site may shed some light on it. another alternative could be to install grisoft av, as it's free for domestic use and received a lot of good press.

I am actually in touch with the support team at Quickheal. Their latest response is something I have tried and there are 3 DAT files that I need in order to get my anti-virus updated. It's not working in the folder I have set up which leads me onto the next question you have made me curious about.

What is Grisoft AV, what does it do and how do I get hold of it?

Wincleaner's update feature is very new to me. Because I have regularly been forced to re-install my operating system for various reasons, so I have been forced to visit their homepages and do automatic updates which were free and simple and only involved me making a couple of clicks. They changed it recently and I am using IE5.

Go to Trend Micro
and do their free online scan. It is great if you are not sure if your anti-virus is update as it always has the latest up dates. I use it even though I have Norton installed and it did catch a virus that Norton did not catch.

JoniF,
It seems that Trend Micro no longer have free online scanning anywhere in their pages unless you can direct me to the right place...

Thecomeons,
I am downloading AVG as you directed me to. I hate and am very scared of viruses...

Thank you both. I will keep this page updated if anything else comes up...

AVG is great. Stable on all windows vers. Very light and always current on updates.
Oh yeah its Free!

As far as the original problem. To manually update your Virus software you want to put the DAT files into the folder the software looks at to update its database.

I tried to do that and got greeted with a whole load of options within that folder for which I picked one.
Naturally it didn't work.

I have now installed AVG but still have my Wincleaner anti-virus which I might get rid of altogether if Quickheal's support team do not reply to my recent message again.

Anybody,
Does having two anti-virus programs on my pc do any harm?

Giving my pc a free on-line scan right now...

On their front page, underneath Enterprise tehn virus protection there is a list, one of the options is "Free online scan" Click on that link and then click "Scan without registering. It will down load the updates and scan .

Yeah, er, thanks JoniF.
I managed to find it eventually before you were able to direct me by going through the UK editions site and housecall thanks to the tip from KiwiPete whose link didn't exactly work but led me to try other methods. His link was a hint for me...
