Build ing a new PC and case Mod
|
|
|
| I am building a new PC and want it to a very unique system, high end. One of my main focuses is a unique case mod, possibly to be made of CMU. One concern is the effect of CMU if any on ESD if any, the rest I can deal with. I am interested in everyone’s opinion and advise concerning every aspect of this endeavor. The more info and advice I can obtain the better.
Thanks | |

| What is CMU? | |

| I love this site: www.mini-itx.com
Cool mods there, although dedicated to the Mini ITX board. I have one at home, it's a riot it's so small. Great stuff...

I was looking through all those cool custom cases on there a while ago.
A computer in a picture frame,in a lunch box ,in a disarmed missle
Is your case custom or standard?
I've been wondering if anyone had attempted
to build a custom case which I'd like to attempt sometime.
by the way what is yours running?

I got a great deal on ebay, it came with a tiny case, so I have not had to create one. I wanted to put one in the guts of an old CD player, so that I could put it in my rack witht he rest of the A/V stuff. Never got the time. It runs Linux RH 7.3 and it's used as a dig pic shower - hooked up to my 46" TV - and as an MP3 jukebox over 802.11b, as it is also hooked up to the stereo for sound.
I also use it occasionally as a web surfing box straight to the TV, but reading on a TV sucks... and I have a laptop anyway

| Very Cool indeed
talking about digital pics and linux
do you physically attach a digital camera up to it? and if so what kind?
thanks | |
|
| no I have never tried. I have a sony 707 digi cam that has a memory stick in it. My VAIO desktop has a mem stick reader built-in, so that's how I transfer the pics to my server. Then it's just a matter of getting samba to run from linux to access the picks over the network... | |

What has been your luck with getting samba to work? The farthest I've gotten was to be able to access Windows shares from Linux but not Linux shares from Windows.

| It's been pretty much a piece a cake so far. I must have been lucky. Although I do have CCIEtobe looking at one of my prod servers as a consultant because I don't have the time to deal with it at this stage. He is taking care of , you guessed it, a Samba problem | |
|
|
|
| I take back my earlier post about how you give good, useful links | |
|
|
|
|
|
| you're right. And the other link was very good, so you're definitely off the hook | |

Thanks again for sending this my way. I think I see what the problem is

| You're very welcome. It was pleasure, and frankly you did me a favor. I didn't want to have to deal with it on top of whatever else I have going on at the moment | |

| I am completeing a mod myself. I bought an all-acrylic case and parts from here:

The cold-cathode fans are the bomb! They are twice as bright as the straight tubes. The red straight tube is a waste of $. Very Dim. I'll put some pics on-line when I finish it.
|
| Cool, can't wait to see them. If you need web hosting space for your pics, let me know. I always have free web space on my server for cool projects | |

The acrylic case is cool. I can't wait to see how yours turns out. I'm thinking of using that case for my next mod project. You're right about the cathode fans! They are definitely awesome!

So the fans light up? When you say mods what are you referring to? I built my computer in A+ class. I think our cases are Prolite but can't remember.

| Mod systems basically make your PC look like it belongs in a rave club. | |
|
| lol
I never quite thought about it that way
| vickim13 2003-04-23, 3:06 pm |
| So are mods just neet cases then?
How do you put pictures under your screen name. Yeah I'm a newbee what can I say.
| mindmesh 2003-04-23, 3:09 pm |
| Mods go deeper then the cases.. Glow lights, LED fans, Colored or Clear cables, Cases with windows..
The picture under your name is an Avatar.. finding a pic that you like then you can add one by going to your profile.. Clicking on edit profile.
| vickim13 2003-04-23, 3:28 pm |
| Cool so how much does this stuff run?
Could I use a desktop icon for my pic?
|
| Welcome Vickim13.
Note that if the rules have not changed, you need to have a certain amount of posts before you are allowed to use an avatar...
| vickim13 2003-04-23, 3:48 pm |
| Oh Ok sorry wasn't trying to brake any rules. Thanks for the info Freak. Like the hat | |
|
| No worries, I was not implying that you were trying to break some rules. I just didn't want you to look around for the avatar setting if it is not there yet
I like the hat too... it's my sons' and they dig it when I wear it. Then again, they're only two years old!
| vickim13 2003-04-23, 4:04 pm |
| Ahh that's sweet. So are they twins then? | |

Arrrr... Ye Matey so that is the story behind the hat

Yup, they are. They love to say "Papa, Pirate?" and smile. How can I refuse? The snapshot was taken one night, and since I was looking for a silly pick to use as an avatar, I figured that this one was as good as it gets

They like to watch football too! Needless to say, I don't care if they ever play... it's just a riot to see them in football gear

| Freak that is one hell of a nice picture. You are a lucky guy. | |
|
| thanks guys. Believe me, I am well aware of how lucky I am. I adore those kids, and if I had known how much fun it is to be daddy, I would have done it sooner | |

Great picture Freak. Nice jerseys too. Your kids look so cool in their Patriots gear!
|
| My father in law comes to me house every Sunday for the NFL games, since I have a 46" TV and good beer
One week end, he brought those little outfits for the boys, and didn't say anything. He dressed them up, and in came the little guys right before the game started. I don't remember ever laughing harder in my life

Do they have their own networks, yet?
|

As a matter of fact, I have an old laptop that they use. We call it the slaptop - I'll let you guess why
