france supporting US?
|

| I just saw a news article, but it was kinda short. It said that france is happy to see that Sadams regime is falling. So, does that mean that they support us now, or are they just happy to see Sadam losing? | |

Neither it means that they want some of the Contracts to rebuild Iraq and a shot at the oil fields.
| theguy 2003-04-10, 12:55 pm |
| I see. So they dont want to help us out at all, but they want to reap the benefits of what we're doing. I realize that there is going to be a lot of rebuilding, but I just think its kinda lame is all. If they are so willing to go in after the war and try to "help" then why dont they go in and "help" us now. | |

Because they were attempting to contract some oil fields in Iraq as were the Russians. They felt like if we went into Iraq then they would loose that option.. So to save their oil interests... Now they want to get close to the new Iraqi government and try and get their oil as well as some contracts to do rebuilding..
personally I say hand out the contracts to everyone except: Syria, France, Russia, and China, as well as, the other nations that didn't support the Iraqi people.

| Alright, I'll agree with ya on this one. Earlier I was trying to find out why France didnt want to support us and I couldnt find anything. But know that I have some more information it makes more sense. thanks for clueing me in mindmesh. | |

| We can always let the French have the contracts for the nasty things, like toilet cleaning and garbage collection.

There must be few French people hiding amongst the people I work with - always away when the work is being done, but always there for the rewards.

| Now that I think about it, I used to work with someone that didnt say that he was French, but after seeing how Frenchies act I think that he may have been one. For instance, one time I had to run a wire over the ceiling from one side of a library to the other and he just sat down and watched me do it. When we had to report back to the "boss" he took partial responsibility for having done it. I should have known, I was so blind. | |

did he wear a blue and white horizontally striped shirt, black berry, string of onions round his neck and speak with a French accent?

| Hey, here is a thought. Since our troops did fine chemicals weapons, should we A) Put saddam back in to support all those protesters. B) What ever happen to all of them? C) I still think our troops needs a good meal, send in the french in anyway.
PS: Yes I know I did not cap saddam and french; I meant to do it.

|
| Let's face it: if you are against he actions of the French government, I can understand that.
If you then take it upon yourself to insult an entire country by extrapolating from the international policies of their government, I have to admit that I find that to be an idiotic concept.
I guess, since I am French, that I am the kind of guy on this forum who is a complete freeloader, who has never helped anybody unless there was some kind of reward that could be gained from that... yeah, your concept has merit and promise, doesn't it?
Simply ridiculous... | |
| mindmesh 2003-04-13, 2:12 pm |
| I actually read over my posts to make sure I didn't sound like I was against the French people. I'm not going to lie, growing up in the US your pretty much taught that the French don't like you and are very rude to Americans. I try to judge a person on how they come off to me.
As far as French people go I have no real problem with them. My problems lie more with the government. Now don't get me wrong I've cracked French jokes, but I've also supplied American jokes to an Anti-American Arab as well. I think everyone here knows that you have contributed more than any single person to the education of other members. I, also, think that the French critics just think of you as an American. Though, that is meant as a compliment it isn't an excuse.

Shouldn't it be the people of Iraq who reap the Benefits? It is their country. We are supposed to be liberating them from oppression.
|
| One thing that keeps being forgotten is that there are many French companies that have had interest in Iraq for decades. We're talking hundreds of million of dollars.
If you think for one second that those private companies are going to somehow "forget" about those interests because the French Government wanted for the UN process to finish its due course, you're sorely mistaken.
It is not for the US to decide of what and who will take care of the reconstruction. It's the UN's job. Period.
Or else, make Iraq the 51st state and move on.

Tough Luck for the French companies. All money owed to France ( and Russia ) will most likely be declared as Odious debts.

I'd say that depends on the new Govnt. not the French companies.

I don't think the UN can do its job. Thats the whole point.

| Well, actually I do think that it is up to French conpanies to forget about their investments. And it is up to the Iraqi gvt to decide whether they want to renew the conrtacts or not, if you really want to be picky about it | |

True.. I wonder how the debt enforcement/forgiveness is going to be worked?
| freak 2003-04-14, 10:05 am |
| Frankly I don't know. I have not lived in Iraq for 15 years, so my understanding of that country is not as fresh as it should be.
Somewhere along the lines, I suspect that the "Old Boy" network will take over. People in high places will remain in high places, and they will once again renew ties with their contacts, most of which will be French, because of the history in common that the two countries have. From there will come either contract renewals, or new contracts being drafted. You have to understand that it takes profound ties, especially in the Middle East, for foreign companies to flourish. Those ties are already in place and have been so for decades...
At the end of the day, I just wish that this whole situation would stop being a pissing contest between the UN and America. I don't see any good coming from that, and frankly, I blame both sides for this situation. I blame the French government, the German gvt and the Russian gvt for being so pig-headed, and I blame the US gvt for starting a process in the UN, not liking the way it was going, and pulling the plug in the middle of that process. Finish what you start, already...
