I name my machines with chemical elements (oxygen, carbon, etc) taken from UD agent. What about yours?
thecomeons

2003-04-10, 5:08 am

at the moment i just name them after the cpu in the pc (athlon600, 200pro, 200mmx, p133). maybe, when i begin some mcp exams, and have them dualbooting workstation and server o/s, i will name them after greek gods or planets or something.

I usually just name them with a combination of what school they are in and who uses that machine. HS_DChapelle That way remote management is much easier.

When I did support at the bank, the name as usually derived from the Asset tag.

ie MIZ0123
MIZ2345

etc

Our server names used to be cool like Gandalf, Merlin, etc. but now they're named after trees (yawn).
theguy

2003-04-10, 9:03 am

Atleast yours are still kind of unique. Where I work the servers are all named after what building they are located in. True, for administration reasons this nameing is easier, but so far as the fun factor goes, its almost non-existant.
winterwolf

2003-04-10, 10:56 am

Our servers are named for the greek alphabet, ie, Gamma, Alpha, Beta, Pi

Workstations are inventoried here so the names are the bar codes on the machine IE, B89745

Well until the last week our office machines and servers were named after the planets. Saturn, Venus, Mars, etc. But now there named after the type of server Exchange55, AppsSrv, etc.

For some odd reason the pc I recently built at home has become known as junior.

Excuse me please a second everyone. I just have to answer a couple of Questions.

Q. Hello. We all know you are tremendously proud of your husband's achievement. Do you have any further thoughts you'd like to tell us about?

A. I am so bowled over right now it is really difficult to think of anything to add. I just can't believe what he has done!

Q. So what is happening next for the Mission now that we have got proper astral connection with your planet?

A. Probably the sensible thing to do is not to ask my husband!

That's it! Thank-you.

I like it when they aren't anything cryptic.
Like their location or what they have loaded/their function/physical description.

I did some contract work at this one place & the Sys Admin got to name them what he wanted.
The ones I remember are /// Trophy Bass - Bubba - Novel_POS - Unix_Thing - BgBlkBastrd - r5Barracuda

This was the most laid back place I ever worked at.

Pooter names should be fun and personal rather than descriptive and boring.
Mine are :
Coyote (Wile.E)P4
Raptor DC PII
CrashTest Celeron (lives up to it's name)
MoonShadow P200 (wifes pooter)
Work pc had to stick to sitecode + number so

Sir Francis Drake who's ship was The Golden Hind

El Draque, French for drake.
theprofessor

2003-04-14, 12:53 pm

El Draque - French? Actually it's Spanish for "the Dragon" which is what Sir Francis Drake was called in the Spanish West Indies. England was at war with Spain in the late 1500s and depending on which side you were on, Sir Francis Drake was either a hero (to the English) or a Pirate (to the Spanish).

But you did get the name of his ship (this one stumps most people) You get points.

What does this have to do with computer names? It's a long story but most of my machine names have something to do with ducks. (Huh?)
enforcer

2003-04-14, 1:01 pm

French/Spanish it's still a foreign language

The work machines are named as to position in the simulation. ie. port, portrear, portcenter ect.
The home ones are named as to the person who has them.

We call ours "The one at home" (otherwise known as "the old one" or "the slow one"); "The one at [husband's] work" and "the one at [wife's] work." At some point, "the one at home" will need to be called "The kids' unit" and the new one will be "the real unit."
