| Can anyone explain to me ehat the process is to register a domain name. I know that it has to be registered with a Name Service registrar, but how do I know If my name is valid or taken? Would I have to go through a waiting period?
If I wanted to host my own Domain Name service, is there a database that I have to link to for registration?
Just curious as to what is entailed in DNS registration

| Hi Outsider:
It's a relatively simple process. I have two sites, and the first one I registered back when only Internic was registering. (www.internic.org) This website now provides useful information on registering domains.
The one I registered with Internic, I have Aplus.net (www.aplus.net) hosting for $9.95 a month. I've had no problems with them.
My second site I registered through Names4ever (www.names4ever.com) and when I registered it, they included free hosting. (They use the banners, though.) I'm not sure if they still offer free hosting with registration, but it's a great site to check to see if the domain you want is taken.
Hope that helps. I'm sure others here will have other useful tips for you. Good luck.

| The cheapest registrar that I've been able to find is godaddy.com ($9/year). Like TekGal, I registered by first domain back when Internic had a monopoly. It was $70/2 years back then
After you register a domain name you point it to the name servers of your web hosting provider, typically ns1.yourisp.net, ns2.yourisp.net etc.
If you want to setup your own DNS server I strongly suggest purchasing O'Reilly's "DNS and BIND". This is too large of a topic to tell you how to accomplish in this thread. Also take a look at http://lifewithdjbdns.org
Btw, I offer web hosting for $5/month

| Yucky, I use DirectNIC, $15USD a year. I refused to buy a domain until the InterNIC monopoly fell. | |

| would my ISP have to assign me a different IP address since I am using a private IP 192.168.X.X? Thanks for the info on the O'reilly book, I heard that these books are pretty good. | |

Unless they're doing 1:1 NAT, yes.
