Finding Porn on a workstation ....

| ah jeez, this morning was the most orquad morning I've ever had working in IT ever.....
One of the guys came to me yesturday saying his internet explorer was acting up, I went to the machine and decided on doing a repair of IE and then applying Sp3.
Everything was going grand, until i got an error saying Sp3 could not continue because lack of space on c drive. So i then went on the hunt for extra space, deleting files here and there. Then I came to a folder 'My Music' which was 730MB's. 'hmm' I taught to myself, I went into the folder only to find tonnes and tonnes of PORN MPEG's !!!!!!
It was around this time I noticed the guy was standing behind me !!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH, RUN AWAY 
I just pretended that i didnt see them and contined to browse the c drive but the fella was as red as a tomato !!! ROFL

| reminds me of when we got the laptop from a user to change some of the settings, my colleague who was working on it just happened to look at the cookies and temp internet files, and found a whole load going to Gay porn websites. my colleague being the kind of guy he is brought it to my attention in an official way, which therefore meant i had to take it further and take it to my boss, who brought it to the attention of the users boss plus personnel.
this therefore resulted in an email going round warning of such things , the user wasn't sacked there and then, but was gone within a couple of months.
NB this laptop was shared between the users in his department which included quite a few female users, so don't feel too sorry for him | |

| At a previous job we had a problem with porn on servers so we made all the offending files read-only then got the big boss to send round an e-mail anouncing a porn amnesty of one week, after which time an audit would be carried out and anyone found with offending pics would be summarily fired.
What a laugh as people sheepishly called the helpdesk to as why certain 'files' could not be deleted. To say the helpdesk staff milked the situation would not be an understatement! | |

| Doesn't this incident present the opportunity to examine the contents and decide if the files are of wholly adult material - featuring consenting adults, or indeed if they contain any 'really nasty stuff'. And then decide what appropriate action to take. You know what I mean.
If I were that guy, I would have legged it out of the door by now, possibly out of the country.

| Personally, I find it pretty bad when there's Porn on my computer. One time.. I worked a midnight shift, when I came home.. I had one of those striping women on my desktop. That's just so gross (Thanks Dad). My mom has a computer too, almost everyweekend I come home I have some weird porn sh*t to remove. I dunno... it's a quick way for a person to lose respect for their father. And it's not like this porn is normal porn either, no.. it's got to be like weird freaky sh*t. I could almost live if it were something in the realm of normality

| Finding porn on a workstation at work is bad enough. This thread made me laugh. I thought I would add my story, which to me was both funny but under the circumstances very disturbing.....
I'm in IT at an elementary school district. We use a filter (proxy) run through the county and, as you know, the proxy can be turned off. Which in this case it was. Each mornng we run a scan on the firewall for keywords and, low and behold there were 18 entries. My Director and I were able to track back using the ip, and dns information stored on our firewall to the sites hit. We traced the internal ip to a computer found in a classroom at one of the schools. We pulled the unit and searched the hd. We found 50 megs of mpegs buried in some remote folder. The "person" had some knowledge of what they were doing, they deleted the history, BUT left the Temp internet files! The cookies were saved in the dudes name....talk about red handed. However, the dude wasn't the teacher, but the custodian! And the nut never cleared the media player histroy, so even though the folder was buried, access was a couple clicks away.
Needless to say, he was brought before the board, where I had to testify against him and report my findings. We brought an outside consultant to back us up and the guy was fired by meetings end.
The funny thing was the sites he was hitting. As evidence we had to print and compile the pages into binders and give one to each board member. Then during the proceedings we had to refer to them..."If you look at exhibit C www.nasty***.com, picture A..." was killing me not to laugh! The board members just smiled and nodded and looked concerned.....
Disturbing part was if we didn't find it, the 3rd grade students could have found this crap and all hell broken loose. | |

| Do yourself a favor and report your findings to at least a couple of people. I had this situation at a place of former employment. Our CFO had been surfing for about an hour/day. I brought it up with the CEO, my boss, a day or two later. within months I was summarily dismissed and he's still there. Make a file list, change the permissions so the user can't delete them. Whatever you need to, but cover your @$$. | |

I have to admit to this one.. No not prn.. I was storing MP3's, heaps of them.. not at work but at my University networked hard drive. I had about 3Gb worth of data ..and this was the highlight when the admin was backing up the data for an upgrade. I was given a warning..and because of this event, they had to implement the quota for all the students.. e.g. all stage 1 student are only given 100Mb, stage 2 about 200 and stage3 about 250Mb. Sad to say i had to delete most of the mps :-( and thanks to ME this quota business came into place at our CompSci deparment.
Suckers... :-)
I mean they should have implemented such m
measure prior to this. Any ways... limiting the size really makes the end users like me think wisely about using the HD.

What you do on your own time is your business, but to do this on company time and store it on their pc makes them liable. What if there had been child porn?

| I had a boss that brought me a bunch of printouts that she found on the network drive of porn text files. She wanted to know why I was saving things like this. (I was one of three males in the office and the only one married.) I asked her why she thought they were mine and got the reply that it had to be me since I was the only one who knew computers. I asked her what she wanted done about it and was told to stop saving these things on company time and not to waste the company toner (laser printer) to print them. I just nodded and she let it go at that.
I didn't get the files in the first place and she told me she deleted them but being the NA of the servers I knew that they weren't really deleted. I searched the entire network for the files and found them on her hard drive and on her live in boyfriend's hard drive which meant that he accessed them origianally and then used her computer (she had a larger monitor and better printer) to see or print them out. When I confronted her with the proof that I had not downloaded those files she just told me to get rid of them and that was that.
Performance review time came and I got a small bonus from her which I had never gotten before and she never mentioned it to my wife who also worked there. | |

| Time for me to contribute to this, now that I have something semi-relevant to say.
When an employee leaves, it's my exciting job to back up their personal folders & email to CD.
That's just in case there's some information (spreadsheets, email etc) that their replacement may need.
Usually it's no more than 500 meg, so easily fits onto a CD.
Anyway, a girl left a couple of days ago & I found that her stuff was over 800 meg.
Too much for a CD, so I thought I'd go through it to get rid of crap jokes, mpegs etc to limit the amount we have to back up.
In there, I found round 40 megs of jokes (Mainly jpegs, mpegs & a LOT of PowerPoint presentations) of naked men.
These had apparently been circulating around the girls of the office for ages.
Of course, I'm not offended in the least, coz..like.. who cares?
Guys don't worry about that too much.
But what offends me is this:
If the tables were turned & that was a guy with pictures, PowerPoint slides etc of naked women, he'd be in so much shit...
It just annoys me that some women are quick to claim sexual harrassment, but it's OK for them to have this material when they know that no guy would bother complaining.
