I'm interested in setting up a network at home, to allow connection in 4 rooms.

Does anyone know of any good publications or web sites which will give good advice.

Your help will be appreciated.

Ohhh, but I like hacking walls and plastering.

Where's the fun in wireless!

the fun in wireless... let's see... oh yeah, I live on an apple orchard that serves as my backyard. In the good season, I get to take my laptop in there, lounge in a hammock, drink something tropical/exotic, while still be able to surf the net or watch a movie on my laptop without being tethered to the house. That's fun to me -- but hey, that's just me

I agree, wireless is the way to go. All 3 of my pc’s are wireless at home with the exception of the study lab and like Freak said I can go anywhere on the property and surf the net…check in with Exam Notes, and enjoy the country all at the same time.

Wireless is very cool as long as you aren't doing anything extremely bandwidth intensive. On a strong link 802.11b will give you around 6Mbps which should be enough for most applications.

I'm waiting on Santa to bring me a wireless access point and pcmia card for my Sony laptop. Lol I can't wait, freedom from the cat 5 cables.

I run wired and wireless.
For the Wireless, i use the 802.11a technologie, which gives me 72Mbps.
Very cool!

But it does have some drawbacks....

Nobody else seems to have it.

That sounds more like an advantage to me (think security). What kinds of actual transfer rates are you seeing? Around 30Mbps?

Your being polite,
it was quite lame really.

The Transfer rate is 72 Mbs, close to the Accesspoint.
With Distance, it goes down quick.

50 feet= 60 mbps
70 feet= 45 mbps
100 feet= 15 mbps
150 feet= 5 mbps

Are those actual transfer rates? What I mean is, for example, try an FTP download over your wireless network. Are you getting these tranfer rates in that case?
