XP printing problem
|
|
|
| hi guys,
i have a small problem. i cannot get a new printer 'hp laserjet 2300' onto an xp machine over the network.
We have the printer installed over lpt cable to an nt4 server which is then shared out to the network of win2k/98 machines. it works fine from all other machines. I went and installed the printer by double clicking on its icon from network places within xp, it installs as lpt1? not \\server\printer. No matter what i try, it always installs as lpt. When I go to print it gives me the following error from notepad: 'cannot print the untitled file. be sure that your printer is connected properly and use the control panel to verify that the printer is configured properly'
If I connect the printer to the lpt port on the xp machine, it still gives same error.
If i go into the printers folder on the XP mahine, it lets me change settings to the printer, but it not only changes them on the xp machine, but on the server also
so in summary, everybody can print fine except the xp prof machine
a little help? | |

Install the drivers for the LJ 2300 as if it were connected to the parallel port. You may need to tell XP to turn off auto detection too.
Once the drivers are installed, add a new local port to that printer (on the XP machine) and call it \\Server\PrinterShare. Replacing Server with whatever name that server has and PrinterShare with whatever you are calling the Shared printer on the NT Server. Post back and let us know how it worked.

| hi again,
thanks for the help, unfortunally it still aint working via the network. I did what you said but when I went and tried typing in the local port name \\server\printershareName it said the network name could not be found? I am definatly sure it is the right share name, \\server\printer
This is a weird one, I dunno why it wont install. Anyway, the printer has a usb port on the side of it, so I'm going to look for an extra long Usb cable, and connect it directly to the Xp machine

Can you ping that server from the XP machine? This is starting to sound like there is a problem with the TCP/IP setup on the XP box.
For the Long USB cable, if you decide to go that route, you'll need something like this and possibly a few of them. |
