| Bought a new server the other day.
It's a Dell dual PII 400 with 4 SCSI drives in a RAID 5 array. It has 256MB of RAM.
Guess how much I paid for it and win a free study guide from www.MCSEFreakPress.com
| Boulware5 2003-12-18, 11:58 am |
| $500? | |
| ChrisDfer 2003-12-18, 12:04 pm |

nope, I paid for it.
For the sake of simplicity, please use the provided link to post your guesses so that I don't have to keep track of two different threads

sneaky. | |

| not really, it's just that in case two people post the right answer on two different boards, I want to make sure that I see it... there's always the time stamps, but from experience, I also know that there's always someone who complains about those... | |

| $ 623.46 | |
|
| azimuth40 is the winner. He came close enough as I paid $202 for it
az, please visit www.MCSEFreakPress.com and choose a study guide. Then use the email link there and let me know which one you chose. I will send it to you at no charge
For those of you who didn't win, fear not. I will be giving away more guides. Tis' the season to give stuff away afterall

| azimuth40 2003-12-18, 3:30 pm |
| Well if shipping is all you want....
But I am more than happy with my prize. Thanks Freak e-mail on the way as soon as I choose. They all appear to be great.
|
| You're welcome... great guessing | |

| Sounds like a good deal freak, but I have to ask the obvious question, have you tried it out yet. | |
|
| haven't received it yet. It's in the UPS truck. I got it from uBid.com and I have never had any issues with them in the past, so I can't imagine that I will have some in this case... time will tell | |
| enforcer 2003-12-18, 4:23 pm |
| nice price | |
|
| thanks. I was not really in the market for another server, but at that price I had to jump all over that deal... | |

No kidding. Building one is much more fun, though.
|
| Not for me. When I first started, I enjoyed it, but these days, it's lost a lot of its appeal. You can scratch your knuckles just so many times before it really becomes a drag | |
| enforcer 2003-12-18, 4:44 pm |
| I think I would have jumped, but then I would have to find a way to sneak it into the house and have it sit somewhere that wouldn't get noticed. I have already been warned not to bring another PC into the house (that was two PC's ago ) | |
|
| I have a similar problem... that's why I have an office | |

LOL. If you'd stop walking on them then you wouldn't have that problem.

Just curious but do you make it a habit of buying things just so you can give them away?

| just wondering how will the dual 450s compare with say an atholon rig? as far as benchmark speeds what are we talking here? do we have preformance that runs around a 1ghz machine? | |

Having got a dell 410 with two PII450Mhz processors I would have to say not.
One processor running at twice the speed of two processors will normally out perform them. the second processor will only come into play when a. the OS and program can use it. b. if there is a lot of number crunching to be done.

| Thats depressing I built a Dual Atholon 1 Ghz. Should have just left it as a single.. | |

Enforcer is right. A dual processor machine will normally not be as fast as a single processor running at twice the speed.
But if a dual processor machine is setup properly, you will see pretty amazing performance. The key is to setup your processor affinity properly. My dual processor rig runs two PIII 1GHZ chips, and it runs better than my Athlon 2500+. Not that my Athlon rig doesn't run great, but there's a noticeable difference in the performance between the two when running many strenuous tasks at once. Now running head to head in a single task (or simple multitasking), the Athlon will definitely outperform it. Like anything, the way you have it tweaked makes all the difference!

Depends what your using it for. If you use it as a server then it should come in very handy. As a gaming rig I'd say you'd be better off using a single high speed processor, considering how cheap they've become (i.e. $200 for P4 2.8GHZ 800MHZ FSB). Not that having a dual processor machine isn't cool though!
| azimuth40 2003-12-19, 9:46 am |
| Unless the single app is specifically designed to love dual processors like Adobe products for example. Photoshop flies on dual processors. | |

I was thinking about building a Dual Opteron for a Gaming Machine. So your saying keep it single processor and just load up the RAM?

And a kick a$$ video card!!!
| ccieToBe 2003-12-23, 3:32 am |
| Nice find freak! That should make a nice box for testing out some SMP setups.
For gaming, the processor doesn't play nearly as large a role as the video card.

pretty much | |

| yup, I installed Linux on it last night. It was 3:30 AM by the time the last package was installed. I am planning on making it a web server to have fun with the sites I develop, before I move them on to a "real" web server. Again, for $200, I couldn't pass on this machine. Heck, I wish I could buy 2 or 3 more... | |

Yeah, it's got me trawling the UK ebay site, looking at the servers on there
