Genocide is typically commited by man against man, but microbes are quite capable of being Hitlerian. What is happening on the continent of Africa is nothing less than absolute genocide. The world needs to make it a top priority to save lives. I don't know what needs to be done, but something on a grand scale should be undertaken.

What about the "genocide" occuring in the US because of the aids problem here? Sure maybe it isn't as bad but I would much rather they spend that money here instead of on some thrid country ran by a corrupt dictator who will take the aid and use it for himself or someday take that aid and use it to harm the US. Screw everyone and think about the US. Give 'em some comdoms and tell them to deal with it.

There is no AIDS genocide in the US. We have a common cold compared to what is happening in Africa. If you knew the facts you could not possibly post a heartless message such as this. Genocide is a word that must be reserved for massive human death. The AIDS situation qualifies by any objective standard as a catastrophe of unspeakable proportions. Coalitions are formed for military campaigns. I suggest we need an international coalition dedictated to a war on AIDS. Do some research and you will change your mind.

Well the truth is that I can careless how many people die in other countries. So long I get what I need to survive I say screw the rest of the world. I am an American and makes me practically royalty I shouldn't have to worry nor care about some primitive civilization in the country of Africa or Europe. Those people were put on this Earth to serve us great Americans and nothing else if they are dying that is not my problem. Screw them worry about the US.

Besides Aids is a homosexual and drug addicts disease. We don't need those people in this world anyways.

To me, I think education has to be the key. I am not aware about how much your typical African knows about this disease or how it is spread. The first line of defense it so make people aware of it and how it is spread. Then measures can be taken from there.

It is spreading in South Asia and East Asia quite rapidly as I understand as well, although the situation is not as bad as it is in Africa.

I agree. I was actually just in a bad mood today so I was taking it out on everyone. I even tried really hard to get this little kid to cry at the store today when waiting in line. Kid didn't cry though he actually thought it was funny. I got a bunch of dirty looks though. I think I Am going to go kick a cat now. Then try to figure out why this freaking dynamic DNS crap isn't working.

I don't have statistics at my fingertips, but I have heard some frightening stats on the percentages of the populations of certain African countries which are infected. Also the number of deaths from AIDS is staggering. This is the kind of thing that should cause people to put political differences aside and work together.

Sure it is sad and it sucks that it is happening in Africa but how many kids in the US do not have a place to live? How many kids here will go hungry? Believe it or not that number is alot higher then you might think. I for one would rather see a kid here in the US get MY MONEY instead of some corrupt dictator. Just my thoughts I would much rather have the money spent here in the US.

Well, let's see... In a country like Congo where the average person can expect to earn no more than $120 a year, fortunes are made hourly by who ever controls mineral-rich areas. More profitable than gold or diamonds is the rare substance columbite-tantalite, known as coltan, an essential ingredient in microchips and cell phones. Found almost exclusively in eastern Congo, it can bring in $400 per kilo on the international market, giving rebel factions and neighboring governments a financial reason to keep the war going indefinitely. Only when the Congolese conflict caused a temporary suspension of coltan mining did the Western world feel the reverberations of a war it had all but forgotten: Sony was forced to delay the launch of its PlayStation 2.

Excellent point and evey technician should know about coltan and the congo. This was one of an excellent overview of the congo problem that I kept it bookmarked. The series was the heart of darkness, check the side bar articles also

Here is a case study from American University in Washington D.C.

Perhaps the Pope could realise that condoms are not an evil that get in the way of procreation but as a life saving tool.

It baffles me that the Pope would rather see tens of thousands of people die of Aids for the sake of a few more children(isn't the population becoming overcrowded in those African nations anyway).

I'd hardly call that a very Christian attitude and the sooner he gets his head from out of his arse the better.

We are not going to solve problems by changing people's religions. I am not Catholic, but I have no expectation that that church is going to change its doctrine. I don't expect Jews to start eating pork and I don't expect Muslims to stop fasting during the holy month. The solutions must involve education, scientific research, and free drugs. You mention condoms, so I guess free condoms would be a good idea. I don't know how much of this stuff is being done, but obviously quite a bit more is needed.

There's got to be a lot of money to be made somewhere by not spreading the education bug--because that's the most effective counteroffensive, and certainly the cheapest. When I jump on my "educate" soapbox, some homosexual somewhere calls me a homophobe. Education programs ARE being conducted in the US and in Africa, and until people actually start putting to use what they're learning in the programs, AIDS will continue to spread. It is unfortunate that children are born with it. But when an adult catches the AIDS virus through his own irresponsible behavior, that's not so sad. And when he/she passes it on to an unborn child, that's very nearly criminal.

There are a lot of people who won't catch HIV. Some of them are victims of dumb luck--others stay away from the activities that spread it. How hard is that to understand?
