DURING AN INSTALL-- Let me ask you a question. When you grab new software--from the Internet or off a CD or DVD--do you get the immediate urge to visit the publisher's website and look for an update, a patch, or a bug fix? Do you spend more time reinstalling programs than you do using them? Do you have to have the latest version regardless of consequence?

If you nodded your head, said "yes," or uttered "hmmph" you may be an "update-aholic" and you don't even know it. Or maybe you do know it, but you haven't had time to read the updated FAQ (frequently asked questions) on updataholism.

An update-aholic will not be satisfied with this message for long.

How many hours a day do you spend scouring the downloads sections of tech sites, looking for minor improvements to perfectable acceptable software packages?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to run bug-free software, but you don't have to turn the upgrading process into an obsession. At what point does that obsession become a digital crusade, an unstoppable campaign to purge all of your "antiquated" programs?

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

Version 1.1 of Bob's Utility Software might have repaired many of the issues of Version 1.0, but did it open up a virtual can of virtual worms? Did this updating process create a cascading event of perpetual upgrading that will have your system flashing "You must restart your computer" so often the image will be burned into the back of your retina like the phosphorous on your first monochrome monitor?

I know what you're saying. "If there's a newer version, it means there's new features I'm missing out on. It means that my version is outdated, probably obsolete, and I'm risking complete computer system failure by using it. If they've made a newer version, there must be something wrong with the one I've got."

Tell that to the person running Winzip 9.01b alpha beta build #1520 pre-release test omega, you know, the 30-day trial version.

I'm sure that Version 7.0, 6.0, or 5.0 is perfectly capable of performing the same tasks, but the update-aholic is consumed with the quest for programming perfection, doing everything in his power to get the latest drivers, system packs, and tweaks. He doesn't want to have compatibility issues with that one compressed file that needs to utilize an obscure feature that only the most current release possesses.

There isn't much that can be done for the update-aholic. Although he knows the newer software release may be riddled with bugs, the update-aholic will still forge ahead, knowing that the improvements must outweigh the glitches. He couldn't stop himself, even if he did use the patch.

But unlike an addict looking for his "fix", the update-aholic (sometimes called a "power user") will starve himself of sleep, food, and the caffeinated beverages necessary to keep him functioning. All for the want of a firmware upgrade, or a third-party add-on.

It's terrible what is happening to these seemingly-normal computer enthusiasts. Frustrated by incompatibilities, system crashes, and "blue screens of death," the update-aholic is fated never to find happiness, even if Happiness V2.0 came out with the appropriate fix.

Use of words such as update-aholic make people with problems feel like something is wrong them because they have a diease.

Grow up and think of others.
